Re: [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Martin update?

2021-04-05 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
I'll note that by the afternoon yesterday. The martin had started exploring
areas further upstream than the Peninsula, as far up as the wellhouse drive
bridge (AKA terrace bridge). If the usual spots aren't bearing fruit it may
be worthwhile to expand your search upstream.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Martin update?

2021-04-05 Thread David LaMagna
I think this is deserving of at least daily updates over multiple platforms.

What’s happening so far today?

Looking to head in today but I’d have small children in tow.

The Martin was still being seen by Matthieu Benoit, Janet Labelle and I through
about 6:50 this evening. Toward the end of the day, it was foraging more over
the north side of the peninsula.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Progne summary 04/02/21

2021-04-03 Thread Gus Keri
I have a question.
Could this be just a juvenile male Purple Martin who is in the process of
turning into an adult?
Last year, I suspected that Purple Martin was nesting in Brooklyn, somewhere
close to Prospect park.
On April 28, two of them were seen at the peninsula (south part of the park)
and two days later, one seen at the Rose Garden (north part of the park). Five
days later, I saw one just above the trees of the Vale (near the Rose Garden).
It was very low, I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, it disappeared before I
got a photo and never seen it again. It is very unusual for this species to
last that long in Prospect park.
At that point, I suspected that they could have a nest somewhere close to the
northern section of the park. It might be outside the park.
This bird could be one of the fledging's from that nest who is returning home.

It is just a theory of mine and I could be wrong like many times before. LOL

2021-04-03 Thread Timothy Healy
Ryan Zucker reports that the martin is currently foraging by Duck Island near
the eastern end of the lake, likely visible from the southern shore or the
Peninsula. Good luck to those who chase, and be vigilant for any audio
recording or dropped DNA sample opportunities in addition to photo sessions.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Progne summary 04/02/21

2021-04-02 Thread Doug Gochfeld
This morning, the *Progne *was perched in a tree at the NW corner of
Prospect Park Lake with a dozen Tree Swallows and a single Northern
Rough-winged Swallow. It stayed perched in the tree, puffed up in the
sub-freezing temps, for several hours, only occasionally sallying out over
the lake before returning to its arboreal perches. It finally went out to
forage for the day around 11 AM.

>From what I gather, it was putting on an excellent show for much of mid day
around the cove at the SW corner of the lake, best viewed from the nearby
gazebo. Around 16:00, it relocated to the area between The Peninsula and
Duck Island (both labeled on Google Maps), and it was there through 17:30.
I am not aware of other sightings past this time, though it was getting
darker, cooler, and presumably less insect-heavy around the lake by that
time.

If it continues to follow today’s pattern, the NW shore of the lake, where
the sun first hits, closest to the park entrance at Prospect Park SW and
Vanderbilt Ave., would be the place to be early in the morning. It is
supposed to be not quite as cold as last night here, and we’re slated for
sun in the morning, so it should warm up more quickly than this morning.

The bird continued to strike me, and others, as smaller and shorter-winged
than a Purple Martin, perhaps bringing Gray-breasted Martin into play as
one of the more likely candidates.

Good Birding!
-Doug Gochfeld. Brooklyn, NY.

Well the second day after the martin houses went back up this season at Croton
Point Park a purple martin has been photographed. Nice to have them back albeit
not a Cuban / Caribbean / Sinaloan / or Grey-Breasted martin — but then we
don’t have Doug G up here!!

Good Spring (winter) birding

Park outside the park. There is usually space on Prospect Park SW. navigate to

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Progne

2021-04-02 Thread Doug Gochfeld
A group of birders is currently looking at the intriguing Progne martin in
Prospect Park. It is perched in a tree overhanging the NW corner of the
lake. Nice comparison showing its apparently relatively small size for a
martin.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Progne

2021-04-01 Thread Doug Gochfeld
Here are two eBird lists with a couple of sets of photos of the
intriguing *Progne
*martin from Prospect Park today. The first checklist is from the rainy and
overcast conditions of the morning, and the second is from the considerably
brighter afternoon. The bird was last seen flying over the lake ~15 minutes
past sunset, after which it was too dark to keep track of it well.

https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S84571274

https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S84575730

I imagine that there will be plenty of people on site in the morning to see
if the bird is still present despite the near-freezing overnight low.

Good luck if you go

Very interesting. Can you or Doug direct the rest of us photos of the bird
in question?

I for one haven't seen any and don't have time to scan all the possible
outlets assuming they are posted somewhere. Dissemination of hot news is so
fragmented nowadays it is challenging to keep up.

Thanks, Angus Wilson

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Progne Martin

2021-04-01 Thread Doug Gochfeld
This morning I came across a Progne (genus) martin flying over the lake in
Prospect Park. It struck me as very odd, and resembling martin species
other than Purple Martin. After viewing it for a while in the rain, trying
different vantage points around the lake, I left the park, guessing that
the null hypothesis of Purple Martin was the likely answer.

After reviewing the photos, it is still unclear to me whether this falls
into the vast range of variation of Purple Martin, or is something like a
Caribbean Martin.

Not a definitive identification by any stretch, but it is intriguing, so
worth a look for those interested. I’m on my way back right now to try and
get more views.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Common and Black-headed Gulls

2021-02-25 Thread Rob Bate
The Common Gull has proven to be fairly reliable over the recent week or so
hanging out with the mostly Ring-bill Gulls in the open water in the center
of Prospect Park Lake and also roosting on the ice nearby. It can be pretty
difficult to pick out at times. I saw the gull along with a good cast of
Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan birders today from the south and west shores.

Looking from the south shore, Eric Miller picked out the red legs of the
Black-headed Gull that has also been frequenting the fresh water of
Prospect Park Lake. Later the bird landed on the shore on the west side of
the lake where the geese, ducks and coots keep the water open. The bird
landed practically at the feet of 10 or so birders who were scanning for
the Common Gull.

A female Common Merganser was also seen in the open water in the lake along
with a female Hooded Merganser and 4 Ring-necked Ducks.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Swainson's Warbler: Caution

2017-05-28 Thread Sean Sime
Walking towards the Midwood from Center Drive at approximately 3pm today I
could already hear the song of the Swainson's Warbler from the area just
north of the shipping containers. Within minutes I was able to track down
the call to an Iphone 6 in the hands of a visiting birder.
With no confirmed visuals today or yesterday caution should be exercised if
the bird is "heard only". There are very few clear sight lines from path to
path and regardless if you agree with using playback or not it is clear the
technique is being practiced daily.

It was also clear that many birds left overnight. I did not see a single
Gray-cheeked, Swainson's or Wood Thrush in the Midwood when there were 20+
in the area the day before.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Goshawk

2017-03-12 Thread Joshua Malbin
Information about this bird has been circulated on many platforms already,
but I have not seen it posted on this listserv. The immature Goshawk that
has apparently been in Prospect Park since mid-January (though most of us
only learned about it a little over a week ago) was seen again today by
about 10 people. It has been seen most often in the area of the Terrace
Bridge and feeders, but has also been seen flying toward the Midwood, the
Ravine, and Quaker Cemetery. It can be difficult to see; a group staked out
the Terrace Bridge through much of Friday and I staked it out all of
yesterday afternoon, both without results. Most of us who got to see it
today got only brief looks, though good clear ones. Good luck if you try.

Great numbers of migrants fell into Prospect Park overnight and continued
falling into the early morning. All the birders who could be out were in
the park today and were rewarded with some great new birds for the year and
great numbers of some of the earlier migrants; hundreds of Yellow-rumps,
tens of Blue-headed Vireos, lots of Palms and 3 Louisianna Waterthrushes.

New for the year: Yellow-throated Vireo, Lincoln Sparrow, Blue-winged
Warblers, Prairie Warblers, Black-throated Green and Black-throated Blue

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park/Kings County: 4 warblers +

2016-04-18 Thread Sean Sime
Although the overnight winds were not from a favorable direction the
diminished wind speed allowed for some new arrivals in the park. Most
notable were the increased numbers of Yellow-rumped and Palm Warblers. A
few Pine Warblers are still around and a bright male Black & White Warbler
was feeding low along a peninsula path.

Other new arrivals included House Wren on Lookout Hill, Swamp Sparrow on
peninsula "thumb" and a singing Purple Finch between lamppost 249 and the
perimeter road.

Good birding,

Sean Sime

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Painted Bunting

2016-01-05 Thread Rob Bate
I spent the morning and past noon looking for the PP PABU but with no luck,
There were no reports from yesterday, either pro or con. Our friend may
have sensed the cold weather coming and headed south - maybe the Snow Geese
overhead gave him the news that sub freezing weather was headed our way.

2016-01-03 Thread James Vellozzi
On the matter of the painted bunting why doesn't everyone just stop feeding
birds at bird feeders. Let's assume an oriole or some other bird that belongs
in warmer places arrives then we should definitely stop feeding birds.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Painted Bunting

2016-01-03 Thread Rob Bate
It has come to our attention that at least one individual has been
attempting to lure the Painted Bunting with meal worms, ostensibly to get a
better photograph opportunity. PABU, being a seed eater with a plentiful
supply of food on the Lefrak Greenroof, has no need of supplemental
nutrition and inappropriate feeding could potentially interfere with his
impulse to leave for warmer climes should the weather around here turn
really nasty.

Many of the people who still come to see the PP-PABU come from the general
public and photographer populations and may have little acquaintance with
the ethics of birding hammered out by countless birder hours in the field.
As members of the birding community it behooves us to try and educate
people a bit on birding ethics and perhaps reduce some of the more
potentially harmful and disruptive behavior.

People have been generally respectful of the plantings and stay mostly on
the paths, and we certainly don't have the crowds of a few weeks ago, but
there are always those who, either from ignorance or high motivation, step
into the planted areas for a closer look, and now we may have some who may
be trying to feed the PABU, also from ignorance or motivation.

Please be polite and instructive when working with these people so as to
help correct the unwanted behavior as well as maintain the good reputation
birders have as caretakers of wildlife and natural habitat. I have found
that the large percentage of people respond favorably once they understand
the dynamics of the greenroof and needs of the Painted Bunting.

The Prospect Park Painted Bunting, the Black-headed Gull and the
Orange-crowned Warbler all continue in Prospect Park as of yesterday - most
sorry for the belated post..

The PPPB is in his usual haunt most easily found by looking for the the
photographers and birders surrounding him on the Lefrak Center Greenroof.

The BHGU seems to prefer the western half of the lake and sometimes comes
out on the shoreline there.

The Orange-crowned Warbler has been to the left of the shipping containers
which are themselves west of the Wellhouse on the north-west corner of the
lake along Wellhouse Drive.

During our CBC yesterday Nashville Warblers were found around Spring Creek

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park - Bunting and Gull YES

2015-12-13 Thread Tim Healy
Both the PABU and BHGU continue in their usual spots this morning. Bunting was
feeding down low but showed nicely, and the full was paddling between the
center-lake flock and the western shoreline. Also had an Orange-crowned Warbler
pulling caterpillars from the reeds along the lakeshore between the bridge and
the playground.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park , (Kings) rarities continue

2015-12-10 Thread prosbird

Here in Prospect Park, nature keeps repeating itself. PAINTED BUNTING at the
Rink , BLACKHEADED GULL(BHGU) at the west shore or northwest Prospect Lake. The
continuity keeps going on.

The PAINTED BUNTING during the morning was reported (RBate) at the north side
of the steam pipes or ice making machinery of the Rink rooftop; the BLACK
HEADED GULL was reported at the west shore 12;49 till I got another text
message note it flew out farther into the lake 12:54. Word I received is the
BHGU comes back and forth , showing up between 11 am and 1 pm. ( Observers
Kathy Toomey , Jean Shum)

How much longer do we have to see this dynamic duo repeat their appearances? As
long as we here at Prospect Park like it.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park rarities (Kings)

2015-12-09 Thread prosbird

The dice continues to roll favorably with our two celebrity birds : PAINTED
BUNTING & BLACK-HEADED GULL.

With far fewer birders milling around, I went to see the Painted Bunting. It
seems to be exploring more of the green roof as now the Bunting moved to the
far north end of the Rink green roof. As one come up the curvy path to the left
of the Lefrak (Lakeside) Center Rink admission north entrance, the PAINTED
BUNTING fed within a snakeroot stand between the bridle trail and that
pedestrian green roof path. This location was close to the East Drive.

The other celebrity bird, BLACK-HEADED GULL is a clockwork bird. Apparently its
coming into its favored location the west shoreline of Prospect Lake, by a red
ice rescue ladder near the Well Drive/ Lake Drive T junction. About noon, one
is best getting this gull if he or she hang out at this opportune time.Get
there before noon. The bird was reported today first by Jean Shum, then Dale
Dancis with Manhattan birders in Twitter tweets to me.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park, Brooklyn - Black-headed Gull - No

2015-12-08 Thread Kai
I scanned the lake in Prospect Park from about 830 to 900 a.m. this morning
with no sign of the gull. Most of the gulls were on the water near the center
of the lake, so it's entirely possible the bird is still there somewhere.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Painted Bunting

2015-12-07 Thread Rob Bate
The male Painted Bunting continues in Prospect Park, Brooklyn and, with the
media attention, many people unfamiliar with the ethics of birding have
been seeking a look at our rare and famous visitor. The green roof on top
of the Lefrak Center is particularly vulnerable to soil compaction, the
grasses are still young and not fully established, and there is some
delicate infrastructure, such as irrigation lines, that are subject to
damage as well.

We ask all birders who witness the uninitiated (or even the initiated)
moving off the paths to encourage them to return to the path - and you
could perhaps even give them some background and info as to why this is so
important.

Here is Peter Dorosh's blog post from today.
http://prospectsightings.blogspot.com/2015/12/rink-rooftop-enroachment-and-warning.html

Thanks in advance and thanks to all who have pitched in already.
