My applause, Stan!

PS. Larry, I would suggest a yet more outside of the box solution.
Implement the following procedure into a habit:
Always carry a big clothesline clip with you.
Before you open the card door, attach that clip to the end of you nose.
Once the door is closed, you may remove it.
This way you'll feel when the door is open, even if it pitch-dark. :-)

Hey Larry - you need to think outside of the box! Or in this case, outside of
the camera.
1. Spray paint your entire camera body a glossy white.
2. When you leave the SD door open, the black hole that results will contrast
nicely with the white body.

Has anyone tried this? Is there any obvious reason why I shouldn't try this?

26 amazing, wondrous panels of pixels? Be inspired? I think not. Nothing

Bob's comment made me laugh as the ponderous prose of the engadget
blurb was ridiculous.

To me, the theme of the set is somewhat limited. Most of the photos
are technically good, but there's only so much interest to me in
seeing people bent over their cell phones, texting. There's a sameness
to the shallow depth of field, blurred background aesthetic being
used becomes kind of boring since the subject matter isn't all that
strong.

I hope the broader conceptual theme of my Communicating series is
evident in the photographs I've been showing.

Re: PESO 2011 - 110 - GDG

2011-07-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks for the comments!

Yesterday, I attended the workshop reunion annual party. This is a
gathering of photographers who've taken workshops with Brigitte
Carnochan (http://www.brigittecarnochan.com/) over the years ... I
participated in one of her exhibition workshops (the Foto Nova 19
show in 2009). Attendees usually bring some of their current work to
share. Since I hadn't made many prints of the Communicating series
yet, I decided to try an idea I've been toying with ... I printed 11
very small images onto heavy paper about 3x4 inches in size (with big
borders!) and tipped them into a pocket-sized Moleskine fan-fold note
pad. Communicating was written on the cover and the prints were
presented on the table with an 8x magnifying loupe to allow viewing
them in detail. My hope was that the small size and loupe invltes an
intimacy and closeness with the photos that draws a viewer into the
series in a way that exhibition sized prints in a folio or gallery
generally does not.

Overall, I think the concept is a smashing success. I got so many
complimentary comments, both on the photos and on the presentation, I
think I gained three hat sizes. Temporarily, of course. ;-)

Now that I see how well it worked with the viewers, I'll figure out a
better way to make these little books ... as a prototype of the idea,
it was successful, but tipping in small prints is tedious and the
standard binding of the Moleskine note pad limits how many prints can
be included in a set too much. I'd like to do more of these with about
20 to 30 images, but there has to be a way to produce them in small
numbers and to a higher quality standard that is more efficient.

Implement the following procedure into a habit:

Once the door is closed, you may remove it.
This way you'll feel when the door is open, even if it pitch-dark. :-)

Words cannot describe how friendly and helpful the PDML is.

But I have not yet had anything bad happen to an open memory door. I have my

Hey Larry - you need to think outside of the box! Or in this case, outside of
 the camera.
 1. Spray paint your entire camera body a glossy white.
 2. When you leave the SD door open, the black hole that results will contrast
 nicely with the white body.

FW: Amateur photographer assaulted in Greenwich Market

2011-07-10 Thread Bob W
I had a bit of a to-do earlier today. It really made my blood boil, so I've
sent the letter below to the manager of the market, cc:ed to the local paper
and the British Journal of Photography.

I won't be pushed around (literally!) by people, especially self-righteous
busybodies.

I'll let you know the outcome, if there is one. And I'll post the offending
photograph later.

Grumpy

 Dear Sir or Madam,

Earlier today (10 July 2011) one of your stallholders, who identified
himself as a photographer, assaulted me while I was taking photographs
 in Greenwich Market.

The incident began when he took hold of my arm and demanded to know if
I had asked permission of the person whose photograph I'd just taken. I
told him that I don't need permission to take photographs in public
places. He then claimed that he could arrest me, so I invited him to do
so. He took my arm again, pulling vigorously to try and move me along.
I told him to take his hands of me, and that continuing to detain me
was itself assault. Despite this, he held on to me until I freed
myself. After an exchange of words we parted company and I went about
 my lawful activity.

This is not the first time that a stallholder has tried to stop me
taking pictures, although it is the first time that one of them has
 laid hands on me.

Please would you make clear to all of your stallholders that
photography in public places is a legal activity. For the avoidance of
doubt, here is the link to a page about it on the Metropolitan Police
 website: http://www.met.police.uk/about/photography.htm.

Please also ask your stallholders to acquaint themselves with the law
as it applies to so-called citizen's arrest. In short, any attempt to
stop someone going about their lawful activities is itself illegal and
may be assault. If this happens to me again in Greenwich Market I will
 press charges.

This is not just a matter of law, it is also a matter of commercial
good sense for the stallholders. The incident today caused a scene.
Greenwich Market is a significant attractor of tourists and income to
the borough, to Greenwich Market and to the traders. Tourists and
locals alike enjoy taking photographs. If your stallholders take it
upon themselves to try and stop people taking photographs, then both
tourists locals will stop coming, and we will all be worse off for
 it.

That's an interesting issue you bring up, Larry, albeit rather off the
topic all together. You see, if you're concentrated on something and
your train of thought is derailed, in a manner of speaking, I doubt
that a mnemonic could help you back on track. I know, it happens to me
often. Consider this bit of C# that I recently found I wrote myself

SomeType var = null;
if (var == null) return null; else return var;

Clearly, I haven't been concentrated at the time I wrote this bit.
Thankfully it is sufficiently harmless...

I hope, you see my point.

Pentax K-1000 (film), 35-80 zoom, Kodak gold film questions but maybe for sale

2011-07-10 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Ok so I could not resist making a $29.95 purchase yesterday at my local
Salvation army

There in the display case in the front of the store was
K-1000 with a pentax smc A 35-80 zoom. Guy behind counter asked me if I
wanted the case it came in I said sure...

The case turned out to be a pretty decent small camera bag which he just
plopped the camera into and handed it to me.

Well, inside there were 4 (24 exposure) rolls of Kodak Gold and
a Canon sureshot 85zoom (hehe). Which is probably pretty much worthless.

I'm torn between keeping the stuff and selling it.

So here are my questions...
The K-1000 is in mint condition but it is not an oldie... it is
Assembled in China one thing I'd like to check is to see if the

serial numbers are NOT on the stolen equipment list. I've forgotten how
to do that...

The other is for opinions on the 35-80 zoom for use on my ist D - I know
I can check that myself just using it - but more input would be nice
too. In other words, I might sell it if it is desireable but not super
great... is it better than my 18-55 kit lens at comperable focal lengths?

about the film -- is there a place to go on the web to put in the
bar code number to find out how old the film is?

Thanks in advance, gang

turned even Bob's head on this matter :-)

The theme overkill prevails, though. tight theming gets a bit tired,
 frequently.

But I would imagine some people were turned off as was I by not being
able to easily find the enlargements.

yes, I struggled to find th enlarged versions, so I was already annoyed when
I got there. 'Theme overkill' is exactly right. He could have made his
point, whatever it is, with no more than 4 pictures. Someone who wants to
sell gold shouldn't force his customers to climb through a mountain of ore.

I'm a Moleskine junkie myself--having the daily planner, various themed
journals, and the Cahier series in all sizes and colors--, and your idea,
Godfrey, sounds lovely. I've actually been thinking about doing something

Moleskine is now doing *custom notebooks*. Maybe they could create one to

Also, digital notebooks are now available, and I just downloaded a Moleskine

That's a very good idea - I like it a lot. You can get bigger Moleskines
that do that, if you mean the memo pockets:

Ann,
I don't have direct experience with that lens but there's some meager
information at Stan Halpin's lens comments page.

http://stans-photography.info/LongComments.html#28-80%20mm%20f/3.5-4.5%20A

Very little so it seems. It doesn't seem to be very desirable. Nor
especially good. Though the information on build quality seems to be
conflicting. Maybe Jostine and Jens can illuminate their comments.

About the barcode, I can't tell you much. I don't think it tells you
anything about the date of manufacture.

If your stallholders take it
upon themselves to try and stop people taking photographs, then both
tourists locals will stop coming, and we will all be worse off for
it.

It presents a fan-fold paper strip and folds to about 5/16 thick in

tipping in 11 prints on Epson Enhanced Matte paper fills the cover
binding completely. What I'd need is about double that binding
thickness in the same page size for a set of 20, given a tipping in
printing assembly.

But I have some other ideas.

Subject: FW: Amateur photographer assaulted in Greenwich Market

I had a bit of a to-do earlier today. It really made my blood boil, so
I've
sent the letter below to the manager of the market, cc:ed to the local
paper
and the British Journal of Photography.

I won't be pushed around (literally!) by people, especially
self-righteous
busybodies.

I'll let you know the outcome, if there is one. And I'll post the
offending
photograph later.

If your stallholders take it
upon themselves to try and stop people taking photographs, then both
tourists locals will stop coming, and we will all be worse off for
it.

Not much of a picture, but there's a story behind it. A young man was shot
dead last Sunday evening about 200 yards from my house. When I went past
yesterday, a couple of hours after taking the photo, there was a vigil
taking place, of what I assume to be his family and friends. It would not
have been appropriate to stop and take pictures.

PESO first captures with my new K5

2011-07-10 Thread Toine
I finally got myself a K5. The first one had some serious dust inside
the sensor (one black spot, different from the dust chain seen in
first batches). My local pusher promply swapped the cam and made me
happy. What a beast the K5. A few captures from last week:

Stars:

Moonlight
http://www.repiuk.nl/index.php/#id=album-126num=content-4605

DA12 24 30s without in camera noise reduction. The second has some hot
pixels. I need to figure out how to substract a dark frame manually

I'm surprised how good the K5 is. It manages to squeeze the best out

improved SR. Astro and night photography is now easy.

Re: Pentax: The Best Binoculars, according to Hammacher!

hurt us! Now 30 million customers might get acquainted with our obsession.

One of those good-news/bad-news stories. Good to help associate the Pentax name
with a Best Of . . . rating in any category. Bad news is that the category they
are referring to is zoom binoculars. In my recent research on binoculars for
birding and other uses, one consistent recommendation from many trusted sources
was to never purchase zoom binoculars for any reason or intended use. Unlike
modern zoom lenses on cameras, zoom binocs are apparently still in the
cute-but-worthless-gadget class of products. So I can foresee a scenario
wherein throngs of the idle rich buy the Pentax UCF Zoom; they quickly become
dissatisfied, discard the binocs, and drop the notion of replacing their Canon
full frame cameras and $10,000 lenses with better cheaper equipment from Pentax.

So you can see, every silver lining has a cloud wrapped around it.

RE: Pentax K-1000 (film), 35-80 zoom, Kodak gold film questions, but maybe for sale

2011-07-10 Thread John Sessoms

Ann Sanfedele

There used to be an online registry you could search for the camera
serial number. A quick look just now indicates the domain is for sale,
so the registry is probably defunct.

Just because it's the Salvation Army, I would suspect it was not stolen;
more likely something left behind by someone that ended up getting
donated during a house-cleaning. Whoever had it didn't appreciate its value.

The other is for opinions on the 35-80 zoom for use on my ist D - I know
I can check that myself just using it - but more input would be nice
too. In other words, I might sell it if it is desirable but not super
great... is it better than my 18-55 kit lens at comparable focal lengths?

about the film -- is there a place to go on the web to put in the
bar code number to find out how old the film is?

Thanks in advance, gang

If you had the box the film came in you could go by the expiration date.
If the film has been exposed, I'd just take it to a mini-lab and get it
processed to see if whatever is on it provides a clue when it was taken.

I would suggest telling them it was film you found in the camera that
you bought when you drop it off.

Well according to the guy's comments so far, the lens is not such a

vintage being assembled in China.

It is all unexposed.. although the little Canon has film in it that
may have some frames exposed... I'd jsut toss em.. but the battery
is dead and I can't get the film out without a battery in it.

Of course, I could shoot a roll myself , just for the sport. I THINK
there is a code on the film itself that tells it's age - but I may be
wrong.

Often small stall holders who don't want to be photographed, do so
because they are selling illegal, (pirate or stolen). Perhaps that
was the problem.

Not in this case. The chap who tried to stop me is not the one I
photographed - who has been at the market for years and is a lovely guy. The
guy who tried to stop me is a photographer with a stall.

I wouldn't have threatened to bring assault charges next time. I'd
have gone ahead and done it this time.

I don't have a crystal ball, just the experience of these past 4 years
spent looking at the camera market and reading what the various camera

conclusion that camera makers are not interested in providing us the
camera we want, but rather an average camera than an average consumer
will buy. You know how a Formula 1 car never travels at the average
speed clocked during a race? I find cameras are the same: There is no
average customer that an average camera is going to be really happy,
instead each customer has to bend over and twist themselves to adapt
to shooting with an average camera. This state of affairs annoys me to
no end.

I'll leave it at that.

If your stallholders take it
upon themselves to try and stop people taking photographs, then both
tourists locals will stop coming, and we will all be worse off for
 it.

only two disparate reviews, but the clincher for me is that it is the

I think the 35-80A lens was sold as a kit lens for the last of Pentax's

According to the K-Mount Page, it looks like the A and the F had the

I finally got myself a K5. The first one had some serious dust inside

happy. What a beast the K5. A few captures from last week:

Moonlight
http://www.repiuk.nl/index.php/#id=album-126num=content-4605

DA55-300 ISO800.

I'm surprised how good the K5 is. It manages to squeeze the best out
of my glass like the 55-300 which is a joy to use at ISO800 and
improved SR. Astro and night photography is now easy.

Nothing fancy, nor artistic, I just felt like sharing.

Comments are appreciated.
Response may be brutal ;-) (just kidding)

Was out and around some rice fields yesterday when this buzzed me. Love the
angry earth shaking roar of a powerful rotary engine crop duster making a low

Nothing like the growl of an Ag Cat to get the adrenalin flowing. Looks
a little unnatural, though, with the prop stopped. ; ] Nice catch,

Re: Has anyone painted the inside of the SD card door?

2011-07-10 Thread Ecke PDML
Sounds like there may be a small niche market for SD card funnels after all =)

2011/7/10 Jens p...@planfoto.dk:
 I never had this problem.
But I broke a lot of SD cards. They are quite prone to braking or just
loosing the lock thing. I frequently have to glue the damned things together
agian. Almost all my cards have af glued lock these days. I wish Pentax had
stayed with the CF cards, which are much more durable.

Once again, I moved my camera while leaving the SD card door open.
 Fortunately, no damage was done.
It occurred to me that it being open might be more noticeable if the
inside of the cover were more visible, white paint, reflective tape or
 something.

Has anyone tried this?  Is there any obvious reason why I shouldn't
 try this?

Hi!

This week we had an international festival of Live Statues in our town. In
fact, it was the second such festival, the first one having taken place last
year.

Galia and I went there also to take some pictures. So here is a little gallery:
(8 pics by Galia and 10 by me)

Have your brutal and honest say.

Thanks.

thanks Matthew -- it worked (with two attempts), and tied itself to my Google
