I agree that Bill Robb’s photo gets the blue ribbon this month!

The prize for the best title should go to Eric for “impathable.” (Either very
clever, or he was using voice recognition with a bad lisp.)

Dan, as you may know Randall Thompson set a set of Frost’s poems to music in
his choral work “Frostiana,” which begins with “The Road Not Taken.” I’ve sung
Frostiana enough that I don’t need the score anymore, and I love it.

“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence.
Two road diverged in a wood and I,
I took the one less travelled by.
And that has made all the difference.”

Henk, how large are those ugly slugs anyway?

Joe, I feel the same way. We haven’t been to Asia, but my wife and I were
getting to Europe for work (with some holiday attached) once or twice a year.
My last trip was one to London in April 2019. I surmise that the photo is Notre

Really nice gallery again. My favorite is Toine’s; the minimalism really works

definitely minimalist because of the broad open space - but whole

Another interesting PUG, with many great images!

I agree that Ken Waller's "Monet" is the pick of an outstanding litter,
Words fail me in trying to praise it.

I also very much like Dave
Brook's "Hard Water" and Matthew Hunt's "Red Lights." both exceptional.

Ann's "Bottled" is also excellent and gave me a real chuckle. On my three
trips to Switzerland over the decades, I constantly watched the locals
filling their Perrier bottles with water out of the public fountains.
That

water is indeed better than actual Perrier.

Depends on the well. Celestins is nice, not at all sulphurous, with very fine
bubbles. I lived in Harrogate for many years and some of the water there is
very sulphurous, and there is the occasional whiff of hellfire in Vichy, but
not as much as Harrogate. Vichy is a very attractive town.

On a similar theme, a town in New South Wales banned bottled water in 2009.
Sadly it doesn't seem to have caught on more widely:

Les Eaux Municipales means tap water...

Except that it's glass, it would be nice to carry one around for refilling from

In Vichy at the source of Celestins you can draw the water free, or go into a

Another interesting PUG, with many great images!

I agree that Ken Waller's "Monet" is the pick of an outstanding litter,
Words fail me in trying to praise it.

I also very much like Dave
Brook's "Hard Water" and Matthew Hunt's "Red Lights." both exceptional.

Ann's "Bottled" is also excellent and gave me a real chuckle. On my three

I figured you could see Mt LeConte if conditions were right but what
other mountains are between GFM and LeConte I could see being a problem
but not the distance as the crow flies, I didn't think.
I'm thinking of Lookout mountain and seeing seven states from the
summit.  And of course in Alaska :-)

I won't bore y'all with all the crap that's been going on why I didn't
get around to submitting anything for this PUG when National Parks was
a natural fit for me.

Instead here's one I could have and probably should have submitted.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/4531053717/lightbox/

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, five minutes before sunrise on April 18, 2010.

It was the first day of the season & admission to the lighthouse was free
that day. I didn't know that when I left Raleigh in the middle of the night
on a whim to go and photograph lighthouses in the dark but it turned out
lucky.

Re: December PUG is up!

They knew they were eventually going to lose the land because of rising
property taxes, so they sold most of it to the state to become a park.
They retained a concession to run the attraction as a non-profit
environmental education facility, but it's also under NC State Park rules
(which is why they're so uptight about alcohol on Nature Photography
Weekends).

I think it's pretty slick how they managed to keep the real estate
developers at bay. Now if they could just figure some way to get rid of
that g*&^@#n Sugartop!

IF there was some way to set up to implode it, I'd be willing to pay double
or triple admission just to watch.

Grandfather Mountain is not a national park, however the Blue Ridge
Parkway that runs across the shoulder of GFM *IS*.

Grandfather Mountain used to be a private attraction, but recently
(2015 I think) Hugh Morton's heirs donated the land to the State of
North Carolina and GFM is now a North Carolina State Park.

But a gorgeous one! I counted the parks I've been to in North America
and there are 7 of them.. (two of the same park, amazingly - YOHO)
including mine, of course...
Love the caribou at Denali, Ken - and Brian's Pinnacles leaps out at
me... but so much prettiness throughout.

My personal favorite is for a very personal reason.. (in addition to it
being a lovely shot)
I think I know those ravens at the Painted Desert!
WHen did you take the photo, Jan?
I named the one in front "Sam" .. Ok, maybe it isn't Sam and his wife,
but I made friends with a Raven on the blue mesa overlook in the late
80's - He was stealing crackers from me then I couldnt resist (what you
are not supposed to do) feeding him. A couple of years later, nearing
the overlook , I saw a raven overhead and called out to him..
damned if he didn't come in for a landing, right in front of me... much
to the delight of RIchard's daughter who was traveling with us.

While it is unlikely Sam recognized me and was just looking for anyone
to give him a handout, the ranger
said it was entirely possible it was the same guy, as ravens settle in
to favorite places and also mate for life.

I took this photo of Sam in 1990 - and it got dolled up for inclusion in
my book of poetry..

I had my Raven experience several years back while in a state park just
north of Moab Utah. My wife and I were mostly alone sitting on a bench near

raven play in the updrafts. He noticed us and started doing aerial maneuvers

My favorite, however, is Ken Waller's "Caribou." What a magnificent
beast,

and what a splendid pose. The background is just right: Out of focus
enough to avoid distracting the eye, yet clear enough to strongly convey
the environment.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate the comments.
I had tracked this beast off road for some time and he gradually became
accustomed to me allowing me to get as close as I dared. The OOF background
is one of the pluses when using big glass.

Not a large gallery, but a very enjoyable one, with many entrancing
portraits of National Parks all over the globe.

Rick Wormer's "Haleakala Crater" touches my soul, as that is just about
my

favorite spot on the planet -- next to the beaches of South Maui.
Jack Davis' "Moulton Barn" is perhaps THE classic national park view, and
he managed to take that oft-photographed site and make it feel alive.
Jn van Wijk's "Painted Desert Locals" is perhaps the most dynamic; I love
the way he capture both the perched bird and the airborne in that
well-composed image.
My favorite, however, is Ken Waller's "Caribou." What a magnificent

It was taken on July 28, 2008, on a roadtrip starting in Phoenix,
and traveling over 5000 miles in a grey Mustang convertible,
visting about 10 parks along the way :)

This is directly next to the vistor centre in the Painted Desert,
when I drove up there from the Petrified Forest ...

Luxury! We had to eat half a handful of freezing cold gravel... actually we
were surviving on takeaways for a few days. We also used the microwave and the
bathroom handbasin :)

The poor electrician had a long day today, he went home around 8:30pm but
managed to get everything sorted out so we were able to cook again. I'm liking
the new induction cooktop but it's going to take a little getting used to.
Just need to get the dishwasher installation finalised and we'll be fully
functional.

The flooring goes in next Monday and I'll work out the lighting and final
decorating at some stage. Don't ask how much this is all costing :(

Cheers,
Dave

On a related note, we're planning on a bathroom rebuild early in the New
Year. The bathroom will be out of service for 2-3 weeks - and we only
have the one.

It will be the middle of summer.

John,

Demolition on our rebuilding project (which included the kitchen, and
a good deal of structural work) began 6 June. We were using a charcoal
grill, toaster oven, and microwave until 24 Nov, when we were =barely=
able to cook Thanksgiving dinner in it. Finishing work is still
ongoing.

These things take forever, even with a good contractor. I feel your pain!

Don't cheat yourself.

I expect I may have a usable kitchen by the end of the year. Won't be
finished or "fully functional", but it will suffice.

I've removed the plaster from two walls & ripped up half the floor;
replaced the corroded drain pipes & damaged sub-floor. I'm adding
insulation in the walls & by next week I'll have enough sheet-rock hung
& enough of the new tile floor installed to go ahead & install the base
cabinets & counter top.

Haven't run into any asbestos yet. Knock wood!

I'm having to do the job in sections & work around everything else on my
schedule. Because the kitchen is 'L' shaped, I still have 4 walls to do
& about 2/3 of the floor to replace plus wall cabinets, painting, etc,
but none of that will keep me from being able to use the kitchen.

Right now, I'm reduced to what I can do with a microwave oven & whatever
small appliances I can temporarily place on top of it and having to wash
dishes in the bathroom sink.
