Title: Re: TLS + Self Signed Certificate

Hello Vilius,

how is that supposed to be helping the original poster?
I believe he was asking for a possibility to explicitly mark a certificate as trustedlocally. To my knowledge Thawte alia can only issue him an official one, which is not really what he was aiming for.

I would join the request for the possibility to store an exception for an otherwise invalid certificate just as I can (for example) in Firefox...having had the same problem in the past. The insistence of TheBat! in keeping complaining about the certificate at each and every connection is quite annoying.

Subject:TLS + Self Signed Certificate

Hi all,

I host my own mail server (Courier). Being the cheapskate that I am, I use a self signed certificate for TLS/SSL connections. I am using the internal S/MIME and TLS implementation.

I have had different scenarios in different versions. This is the current 5.0.8 behaviour: if I set the "Secure to dedicated port" option in the Account dialog then every TLS/SSL connection (IMAP or SSL) complains about the self signed certificate.

Is there anywhere I can register my certificate to avoid these errors?

Regards.

Re: TLS + Self Signed Certificate

2011-04-06 Thread Viktor Kabelac
You can do this by using standard plain text connection method.
That is hard to do if the server, for example, only supports SSL
connections (as is common practice today) and uses self-signed certs for
that - and as such just as good as advising someone, who complains that
a car lets him put in diesel where unleaded is needed, to try to run his car on
wood.

companies and even universities use good certificates. I use 6 accounts

Proper certificates usually cost money, which is a costly good. Apart of
that, there are not many other reasonable reasons for using self-signed

I really do not think a program should be the neighborhood watch officer

Every program that lets me store an exception for a certificate also warns

Since the beta stage of V5, there seems to be a change in how the Copy/Move

In 4.2.42 the folders being open/closed used to copy their state in the
main folder tree
  http://www.offline.cz/hostbits/tbbeta/tbbeta5_2011-03-01_muvfldrs01.jpg

Version 5 though
  http://www.offline.cz/hostbits/tbbeta/tbbeta5_2011-03-01_muvfldrs02.jpg
shows them all closed. On the screenshot you can see the difference between
the folder tree and the dialog's one (my folder tree has all accounts and
many folders open, in the dialog only the current account is open,
everything else closed).

Is this a feature (shorter initial view)? I hope not, because that would
take from us the possibility to customize what's going to be open
depending on the user's mode of use (typically, you'd have those folders
you use most often open in the folder tree - it's a waste of time to have
to open them all in the move dialog as well; and yes, I do use that dialog
to actually move messages between accounts)

Cheers

IMAP TLS: disabled buttons in dialog about invalid certificate /// No retry from TheBat! to rebuild a failed SSL connection resulting in an unfunctional state

2011-07-20 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello,

today I tried to switch my IMAP connection to SSL.

Unfortunately I get the following behavior:

- sometimes: a dialog saying the certificate is not valid with DISABLED buttons
to view the certificate or add it to the trusted CAs list.
  Why are the buttons disabled?

- currently, when starting Thebat, the dialog flashes and disappears, I see
no way to get back to it. So not even the dialog mentioned above is
effectively shown.
The log says a bit of conflicting information: certificate invalid, BUT -
  connected to...:

20.07.2011, 17:00:16: IMAP - Connecting to IMAP server
pop.kundenserver.de on port 995

!20.07.2011, 17:00:17: IMAP - TLS handshake failure. Invalid server
certificate (The CA Root certificate is not trusted because it is not in the
Trusted Root CA address book).
20.07.2011, 17:00:17: IMAP - TLS handshake complete
20.07.2011, 17:00:17: IMAP - Connected to IMAP server
(pop.kundenserver.de)

- without restarting TheBat!, there seems to be no way to make it try to
reconnect, even if I change the connection properties.

- the result is, I have a TheBat! that says Connected to IMAP server
(pop.kundenserver.de) as last message in the account log, but in reality
it's obviously not connected and I am getting no mail

* Is there any logic in it?

* Why do I get no chance to view/store the cert - even though there seem to be
buttons for it?

* Regardless a possible that's self-signed certificates problem! answer -
shouldn't TheBat! notice it has no useful connection to this server and
shout about it, possibly retrying the connection on each F2? Why does it
seem fine with the unconnected state, showing no attempts to do anything?

Thank you.

Disabled buttons mean that the serve didn't send the certificate during the
connection, that's why there is nothing to view or save.
Though the log said something about a self-signed certificate (also I do
not see which TLS implementation would try to set up a connection without
specifying any certificate?). How exactly would the server send no
certificate?

The other situation is much more interesting:
- the certificate dialog flashes and disappears

this?

21.07.2011, 10:27:05: IMAP - IMAP server ready H mimap5 87367

Apparently there was one...only self-signed then.

Wouldn't it be more straightforward to the user if he'd get the possibility
to store the certificate (or even directly mark it as trusted), such as for
example Firefox nicely lets me do?
The provider in question here is probably the biggest player on the German
market and I sincerely doubt that trying to teach him to use certificates
signed by a real authority is a prospective approach.

2011-07-29 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello,

send  the  certificate during the connection, so there is nothing to add. But
if  you  can  get this certificate other way, e.g. getting it from a provider
via the website or by email, then you can add it.

Surely, the fact that TB rejected the cert meant that it was sent by
 the server.
Yes, this was also my point - if TB sees it as self-signed, I would also
suppose it must have
SEEN IT (in order to check it) and thus it must have been sent (also, I
would hardly expect the server qio try to establish a TLS session without
sending a certificate). The log even says so.

I wonder if there is a substantial difference between our and Maxims
understanding of whether a certificate was been sent?

Did Maxim mean the CAs certificate has not been sent, rather than the
server's one?
In a self-signed cert there is no CA in the story...so just
as in Firefox, I'd expect to be able to just say I trust the server's
cert, please add it to the trusted list without having to change to the
address book and look for where to ass it myself.

Hello Roelof,

What version of TB are you using?
What plug-ins?
Are you using the same template for all of your accounts?
Does the problem occur when you're replying to a single person too?

I use the newest TB Beta, but it also affects the latest V5 MSI (and I
actually later found forum messages as old as 2005, with no useful answer).

I use Antispam Sniper, but also tried to deactivate it - no change.

What do you mean by template? Mail template? I use none.

The problem occurs in ANY mail, even the simplest, I try to send since
today.

I have developed a hypothesis:
- today, I tried to download mails from a quite flawed POP3 server.
- after that I get this error, no matter what I uninstall, reinstall or
delete, the one thing that remains constant is the message base
- is there a chance that te flawed server sent *something* (like a
syntactically completely wicked sender, recipient address etc) and this
address got recorded in some of TBs central account files so that any
attempt to use this file ends with an error, ultimately leading to this
message?

Something like the address book or address history comes to my mind.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any file that had been changed
today and seemed to contain addresses.

RITLabs - could you maybe please shed some light on when TheBat!
displays such a message i the first row? What is it checking? Is the
check based on any msgbase files that get modified by downloaded messages?

way of show the size of the emails it's correct.
However it'd be nice if all people were bytes and sizes aware, your
argument is the typical mistake of many IT people. Similar with your
decision on behalf of everyone else on how many pixels do and do not hurt.
Something should be one way, so we simply ignore the mostly different
reality (I am not handling that, no one has any business doing it that way).

The problem with this approach is, that if you are writing an application
for users (normal people out there, you know), you can hardly tell them that
they or their mail contacts are morons (technically, of course you can, but
you'll be doing it at jobs changing in a fast pace).
If there are people sending me mails of 10, 20 or 30 MB (this are
realistic sizes I have witnessed and I have no illusions regarding other
people not seeing much bigger ones), there is no reason to have a column that
contains 8 and more digits and be forced to count them in 3somes to find out the
mail sizes.
So, if, optionally, the display could say 2,4 kB and 15,8 MB, I personally
would be all for it.

Hello Dwight,

I read that you are saying you shouldn't tell them are morons, just
assume they are and treat them as such.
You do not seem to read what I am saying.

I say - your mail partners or users of your mail program do have a way of using
their IT resources, be it by
sending 50MB large mails. Unless you are their boss, it's not your job to tell
them they
should be using them in a way we think is more correct (you are free to think
it, but that's about all).

The conclusion is, big emails are reality and it is not helping to attempt
to deny it when designing and developing software handling that data.
It will only lead to lessened user comfort of senders or receivers
by having their programs crash or display astronomic numbers where MB would
be appropriate.
How was this nice rule...be strict about what you produce and benevolent about
what you can handle?

Re: A more contemporary format of the message size given in the Size-column in message list

2011-10-05 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello Alto,

It's not a problem of width, it's a problem of being able to quickly
tell the size of a message. 3,2MB and 988kB are easier to parse than
 3.454.565 and 1.011.847.

I disagree: If there are a lot of numbers (as in 3.454.565) I get a
grip about the size much easier than if it were just 3.2 (= no more
numbers than usual, have to really read it to tell the difference.)

While it's nice for you if you can immediately map 3.454.565 to an idea of
the practical message size in your mind (and are not simply arguing for
argument's sake), I support Jernej's point that users in their majority
need to know this message is 100 KB big or oh, here come 65,4 MB for
their reasonably fine idea of what that means, and showing them 48.584.657 is
not
supporting them at this at all.
For you, I absolutely support there being a setting that would keep the
display in bytes as it's now.

If you or Dwight prefer, there also can be a setting warn user before
sending message larger than Returning an appropriate message to a
sender of huge messages can, I believe, already be done using filters.

2011-10-05 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello Alto,

While it's nice for you if you can immediately map 3.454.565 to an idea of
the practical message size in your mind [...]

 Not exactly:

In a single glance I can tell that 3.454.565 is a lot, just
because there are a lot of digits. Who cares how much it is exactly.
At the same time, I'd see that 3.2 is not much. It definitly doesn't
trigger my what the $% is this reflex.
I believe the 3,2 would be accompanied by an MB in the list, so if
your list were full of different KBs and suddenly a 64,5 MB had appeared,
IMO it would catch enough attention.

So, the current representation is a much quicker way for me to judge
sizes by first glance. If I get down to really reading it there isn't
much of a difference, but when just browsing the list there certainly
 is.
That'll probably qualify as a matter of taste a.k.a. Geschmackssache.
So why not make it configurable as was originally suggested?

My main problem here is with opinions along the lines of people have no
business sending
large mails so why bother with large figures.

Hello Marek,

 You must mark text/url before

you are right. When I mark the URL, I get URL and Text active in the menu.

Still, I think that's not quite it - but it's more a feature+an usability
problem rather than a direct functional bug.

Think HTML mail...
Often your URL has the text Click here for more information.
But you do not want to make a QR out of that, but ouf of the URL that lies
beneath it.
Since TheBat! knows there is an URL associated with the element when
right-click it, I'd say it can differentiate between text selection and
an object (even text) with an associated URL.

I'd propose that:
- if an element is clicked that has an URL associated, that URL should be
the relevant base for a QR code
- if a non-empty text selection os right-clicked, selection content is what
  counts
- if an empty selection with no URL association is right clicked (that is
probably effectively what
I was doing, I guess), I'd plead that NO QR option is present as it has no
function anyway, thus it has no use and is confusing.

Does that sound like a feature?

5.1.2.: System HTML viewer incorrectly displays UTF-8 HTML messages without correct HTML structure

When TheBat! is set to use the system HTML viewer

these messages are not shown properly. With the internal viewer, they

These messages have the following header:

Is there a chance to detect the encoding the same as seems to be done with

5.1.6.6. AV when Drag'n'droppig TNEF attachments from a mail saved in file

2012-06-26 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello TB-BETA,

I have an email with a TNEF (winmail.dat) attachment saved as .EML
(originally that mail was saved in ThunderBird that cannot handle TNEF as
it seems).

I open this .EML in TheBat! (hit the .EML in Explorer). A new window with
this mail comes, where I see both the original winmail.dat and those files
transparently extracted from it by TheBat!.

When I mark these ex-TNEF attachments and want to drag and drop them (into a
ThunderBird
message or a Windows Explorer folder window), I get the following AV exception:
Access violation at address 00B50F09 in module 'thebat.exe'. Read of
address .

accompanied by the following record in ex_log.txt
v5.1.6.6 MORPHIA/kabelac 26.06.2012 15:02:52.023 GUIDEF:Cannot bind
layout item [MsgCtl].[mReloadMsg]

It may be a bit hard to test if it somehow depends on the data...I can provide
the original .EML upon
individual request. But it happens both with a small and huge .EML, so the data
may not matter.
Maybe it's just an issue of the drop message handler not expecting attachments
that are not real.

Have a nice day!

VK that were nt there in 5.1.6.6 (just double-checked) and do not seem to have
folder and then the folder tree would automagically navigate to that
folder. Alas, it does not work any more.

I actually thought about some purpose like that, but the following speak
against that hypothesis:
- nothing like that was there just one version before (5.1.6.6)
- typing into that field doesn't do anything
- there is also that lowered surface around the buttons that doesn't seem
quite right and is new in this version
- the element focus in the dialog has changed: now buttons have the focus, not
the tree control, so I cannot just type d or 3x down arrow
to navigate to the folder to move to. I found it so much more useful then
the tree control was focused at dialog start.

I have not mentioned the copy dialog as I thought it's in reality one and
the same, just with another flag when calling it...

So is this a feature gone wrong in the end?

5.1.6.8: HTML message with inline image created by TB - inline image not displayed in TheBat!

2012-08-08 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello TB-BETA,

I have just created and sent an HTML message with an inline screenshot

Unfortunately, the inline image is not being displayed in the same program.
When I try to import the message in Thunderbird, there is an error
message saying something like Message contains bare newlines.
To exclude the chance of the message having got killed by the transfer, I
just checked the copy stored in sent messages same symptom. Attachment
there, but not displayed in HTML.

You are completely right - the symptom is actually completely the same as

TB 5.2.1.2 (but also present in previous build): sender blank in inbox message list (it shows in message detail though) for certain messages

2012-09-17 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello TB-BETA,

I have noticed this strange behavior with several messages that I have sent
to myself, while forging the sender address to be my Gmail account.

The issue: the sender field seems blank for these messages in the message
list, though it does show in the message detail.

Apparent cause: Sender address in the form
 m...@domain.tld m...@domain.tld
ie repeating the bare mail address in both the name and address token of the
address.
I can reproduce that anytime, just sending myself a message with sender
formed as above.

I have prepared some anonymised screenshots and will gladly supply the
original messages upon request. Though, as last test shows, it has nothing
to do with the Google addresses etc...it's probably purely the form of the
sender address.
HaTeTePe:www.vergangen.de/data/thebat/2012-09-14%20TBBeta%20From%20Field%20Empty.png

Does TB! get confused by something particular with sender formed like this?
Or is this form of the address illegal for some reason?

A V4 installation shows these messages correctly. It showed like this at
least in the last build and now in the current 5.2.1.2

Anyone any ideas? Thank you in advance!

message list (I've sent you the source of my test case in personal
 mail).

thanks for your test.
After some more testing I am even more confused.
Apparently it IS being provoked by addresses in the form I mentioned and,
in the account in question (German 11 IMAP), it also happens with the sender
(also shown
blank if in that form). So it seems to be a general thing of reading the
addresses
and showing them in the message list.
Though exporting such a message or storing its source and reimpoirting
seemingly fixes it.
In another (POP3) account the problem does not occur at all.

So I cannot deliver a sample that is sure to exhibit that behavior, I only
see it in my TB! :(
Is there a way to get a message out in its *verbatim* form, not altered by any
output filter or so, or can only RIT debug the mail parsing and maybe see
something there?

A question I ask myself every now and then: is it enough to report an issue
here for RIT to notice it, or do I definitely need to create a record in
the bugtracker for a topic to be noticed?

Thank you all!

F9
Thanks. I used to do Ctrl+Shifk+K to show all headers and deem that the

A text compare between that output and that of F9 seem to be two additional

Try highlighting several messages and forward them. It opens a window
that allows you to send them to one address or open several windows (or
 attach as MIME)
Hmm, although the way it functions now is how I would expect it to
function (this is now I use that feature in Thunderbird), you are right - TB 4
did give you the choice to forward them all
to one address or open up in separate editors.
I wonder why the authors didn't just add the third option to it (forward as
attachments).

Also the message that ultimately makes it to the text of the joint message
is the last message selected...probably the first would be more logical
and a choice to the user even better.

 Agreed! Great thoughts.

Actually, if you pick MIME they should go out as attachments. The former
corrected behavior was that each message would go out in the default
How do I pick MIME? In the present state, I do not get any choices to
pick from.
If you mean pick non-text mail messages, then I'd disagree - the
forwarding style should not depend upon magic.
Also, the current behavior seems correct, it just drops previously
available freedom of choice...

So why not just say, the user gets a choice (as in previous versions)
whether he wants to forward the messages in separate new messages and edit
them individually, or if we wants to send them as attachments in one
message. If I could, in addition, select the message to be used as text of
the joint message, that's be the cherry-on-top-of-cake for me.
That way all styles would be possible - I could send one messages with
attachments to an informed recipient and separate messages to my mother.

I cannot say anything about if the sending works, didn't actually try to send
the email
flood. Never used such a feature in the separate messages mode, out of
respect to recipients :)

Re: FR: a macro for software edition

2012-12-03 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello Vilmos,

I think it would be a complete waste of time of the developers. Who cares
about if TB Home or TB Prof is used... It would unnecessarily increase the
 code.
well, for this purpose, who cares about that *version* of TheBat! is used
or whether it's TheBat! at all? I suppose the target group is almost the same.
So if we have a macro for the version, how would one for the edition be a
complete waste uf resources?
Of course, TheBat! has a lot of eye candy that, some may feel, is being
developed on cost of deeper and more substantial problems/functions, but that
is a more general question, not one of a particular feature.

BTW., your message somehow became a HTML one.

Toggling did the trick! I toggled Organisation on and off, and toggled

All headers I was used to were there for me right from the start.

Re: From pop3 to Imap

2013-06-14 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello Mark,

I believe that IS possible. You can change from POP3 to any of the
advanced protocols. It's apparently not possible to downgrade though (I
guess because advanced structures are created in the account for those
protocols and removing them isn't possible without loss of data created
in the meantime...?).

For me at least, for all POP3 accounts, I can go to
Account/Properties/Transport, then in the second block (Receiving
messages) on the right there is a Change protocol button. It doesn't
appear for IMAP accounts for the reason stated above.
The texts may be different for you, I am not looking at an English TheBat!
but a Czech one so I am just guessing the English labels.

Have you tried to read the Google support topic linked in the responses?
They offer several possible problem causes - such as that you aren't using
the correct user name when authenticating for SMTP.

What is your setting in the outgoing mail server area - do you have the
login data entered there too (of so, double-check it's correct), or do you have
it set to like when
downloading mail (which is usually smarter, if the login data is the same, as
it prevents errors)?

The final message obviously says you have tried too often - that is most
likely only a consequence of the problem, not the cause.

Re: Suggestion: The Bat! for Android

2013-09-30 Thread Viktor Kabelac
Hello Dierk,

that's of course one of the tings that would be nice, but such a
development would have nothing to do with TheBat! except for a similar
icon and the fact that both somehow are mail clients.
Unlike with Voyager, the synergy of the two would be close to 0.
Basically, RITLabs would have to launch a brand new Android development
team and create - from scratch - a whole new program.
Do they have so much free resources? If so, I, personally, would
rather like to see them used for a stable TheBat!
There are several players on Android now, whose advantage would take a lot
of resources to catch up with.

Yes, this is what I feared most when writing the original message. ;)
I hope RitLabs will not go this way, because porting PC code using a RAD tool
to a
very limited system with very specific development needs (and Linux-based,
while the original platform is Windows) cannot result in anything good.
That approach would probably be OK for an advertising App showing but a few
HTML pages - but not for a program that does a lot itself and needs to use
as much as possible of the possible host platform features.

If a Thebat for Android is to be a good and efficient program, it must also
be written for Android and not just bent. And with that in mind, I think
there are players who are trying to do that for some time already and I
prefer unlessened development power for TheBat! rather to share it with a
new experimental app.

the behavior doesn't occur when a deeper message in a thread is selected.

- Have only the top level message of a thread (here typically Maxim's one)

- change to another folder
- return

- Open a thread and select a message within

Up and running here.

Trying to test Jerry's report, changing the proofing languages doesn't
crash for me, but most of the languages do not seem to activate. I had
German, US English and Czech selected, *none* of them recognized the
corresponding words, which is used to during my tests just a few betas
back.
Only the German "new spelling" and "old spelling" versions recognize some
words. None of the orhet languages, in whatever constellation. The plain
"German" doesn't either.

I'll try to rever to an older version if anything changs in that regard.
