Tuna,
You were right, we thought it might be a Falcon. There were actually two
trailers that I was looking at when we began that discussion. One of them
turned out to be a Traveler, which is what is mis-labeled in Bryan
Burkhart's book as a Falcon, the other is this Overlander. If I remember
right we thought it might be a Falcon because of the narrow stacked windows
and the front stacked square windows. Anyway, at some point I'll find out
how to put some pictures on the internet for everyone to see, but for now I
have e-mailed pictures to RJ to post on his website. I'm sure they'll be
up soon and I'll take more pictures as I go.

Hello again all,
Just wondering if any of you who own a 1960 Overlander would mind dropping
me a line? I would like to see if some of you could help me figure out
what sort of bed/couch configuration our trailer should have in the front
and I would also like to track down copies of any literature anyone might
have on this model/year trailer. Anyone?

Paul,

I own a '60 Overlander which was made at the Jackson Center, Ohio plant. =
It has been in the family since it was new, it has been in my care for =
over a decade now.

My trailer has a small aluminum plaque rivited to the outside of the =
trailer just to the right of the main door which states the model name. =
Yours should have the same. You may wish to post the serial number (also =
on a plaque near the door) so we can make sure as to the year of =
manufacture, model, and perhaps the factory.

If indeed you have a '60 Overlander I would be happy to share with you =
what I have discovered about the systems.

About the "shocking" problem...We often had the same problem whenever we =
used an extension cord with a 2 pronged plug. It sounds to me that the =
polarity is reversed. Your trailer should have a polarity light on top =
of the electrical box. It will be found in a closet or trunk space =
adjacent to where your cord plugs into the trailer. If the light is =
still working it will light when polarity is reversed. Try plugging the =
cord in the other way.

After replacing the 2 prong plug with one having 3 prongs (no chance on =
our part of reversing the polarity) we had this problem one more time =
when the cord itself went bad.

Get back to me with the serial number and we will proceed from there.

David,

Would you please post your serial number so that we can confirm that it is a
'60 Tradewind? I have never heard of a Tradewind with dual axles anywhere
near that year of production.

I am trying to picture the window configuration on your trailer. Are you
saying that you have stacked windows on two of the three streetside windows?
>From what I am imagining you have a totally unique trailer.

The VAC has copies of sales literature covering the '59/'60 trailers. If you
are a member you can purchase a copy at a nominal charge. It shows the floor
plans, an exterior shot of each model and gives some info and stats on the
trailers. Eventually this info will be available on-line in the members only
section of www.airstream.net

Bob,

Several years ago I needed to replace the shocks on my '60 Overlander so I
enlisted the help of a car restoration friend. After removing the old shocks
he noticed that the bushings where the spring attaches to the axle were all
worn and needed replacing. Within an hour the axle was off an on its way to
his shop for new bushings. The trailer was back on its own feet the very
next day. I was suprised at how simple it was.

Did you break a spring?

That is a wonderful story,
My Grandparents went on several Wally Byam caravans in the mid to late '50s.
He couldn't at the time offord to own an AS but Wally let them join them
down to Mexico as long as they would park in the very rear of the wagon
wheel parking photo sessions. In 1959 Grandpa bought a 1955 Chrysler New
Yorker Saratoga coupe in Navajo red and white with the matching two tone
leather seats. He had it set up for towing and though he could then afford
to buy an AS he died of a very fast speading cancer. That car to this day
sits in a barn at my Aunts house. It hasn't been driven since 1968 when it
was in a fender bender. My late uncle found a new fender for it but failed
to put it on for unknowne reasons. I'm going to see if I can talk my aunt
into selling it to me when I head south this winter and go by her place in
Santa Clara CA.
BTW They have a block of land in Down town Santa Clara, and my father
remembers when they only had dirt roads and were surrounded by fruit
orchards! I f I can find a way to restore my '56 Overlander, the year I was
born and my grandparents dream trailer I would love to see this car and
trailer together.

Thought i'd share an experience i had yesterday (Sunday), towing my newest
traveling rig (the Trailwind's still awaiting new frame and floor, and
interior, and shell repairs) from Reno, NV to Ojai, CA... the trip took a
bit longer than anticpated due to an incident arising from the fact that i
travel with a leash-trained cat (Dr. Katz)...

12:15pm - we're at the gas station at Boomtown, i stepped out of the car and
closed the door behind me... step over the trailer hitch to get to the pump,
when i heard the 'click' of the prowler's power door locks... i assumed that
i'd inadvertently hit the clicker on the keychain in my pocket, and reached
for my keys...

and then, simultaneously, i noticed three things... 1) i didn't have the
clicker in my pocket, 2) saw the keys and clicker in the ignition, and 3)
saw Dr.K standing on the passenger side armrest, paw firmly planted on the
doorlock switch, grinning at me through the window....

oh, and 4), my spare key was in my wallet, inside the locked car. 40 minutes
later, i'd managed to obtain a wire coathanger (NO WIRE HANGERS!) from a
young couple in an RV... the 20th people i'd asked... and managed to open
the car...

i swear that cat can 'chuckle'...

Hi all:
Thanks to Don in Grand Rapids my husband and I are now the proud owners of a
1970 23' Safari. It is being delivered today. Don found this gem and decided
to pass on it and kindly passed on the information to this list. Thanks Don!
This certainly is a wonderful list to receive. I have learned so much about
how to buy one and how to repair one that it is overwhelming.

I will take before pictures and after pictures and maybe some during
pictures. I am sure we will have lots of questions. Fortunately there is an
owners manual, unfortunately it is for a 1971 Safari. I am hoping there will
be a lot of the same information for both years. Anyone know about this??

Thanks again Don!

Daisy,

I have just finished repairing the floor in my '70
Overlander using the same methods you described
(penetrating epoxy and structural epoxy filler). I got
both items here in Seattle and didn't have to pay
shipping (the filler is quite spendy though). I still
have to make the floor level and smooth before I can
install the vinyl and pad so your experience is
helpfull. The filler said it was sandable, but I found
it to take a lot of muscle to work it down and it also
filled up the sand paper quickly, even though I used a
course grit. I'm finishing it off with "Rock Putty"
from Home Depot 'cause it'll sand a lot easier. But,
you're quite right, this floor will never rot.

Jim, no not yet. The guy I called to order the cork said the floor
needs to be real smooth, or any irregularities will telegraph right
through the cork. I think it's flexible enough so it won't crack like a
vinyl floor, but lumps, holes, and bolt heads will show. That's why I'm
making such a deal about filling and sanding. I used Henry 547, a powder
you mix with water. It sets up in about 20min, and dries pretty quickly,
like 3hours ? It takes some muscle to sand it, I used a foam backed
sanding block for sheet rock and sheet rock sanding screens, 2nd coat. I
had filled the worst of the rotten out places with epoxy filler after
the penetrating epoxy. This floor will never rot.

Does any Airstreamer have a suggestion as to a brand of tire and where to

Hi Jaimie,

Welcome to the Society of Keepers of the Tinsel Tubesteak. The 31' trailers
were the largest made at that time and the full name was "Sovereign of the
Road".

If your "Vista View" windows are like mine, there should be a flat aluminum
ring against the inside plexiglass. Gently press on the ring, toward the outer
glass, slide it toward the center of the window by gripping with a sharp
implement (knife point or scratch awl type) and you will see that there is a
hook type of arrangement that locks into the frame. The whole "sandwich" is
held together by the pressure of a rubber "O" ring between the panes of glass.
Once one end is clear, you can tease the whole snap ring out and remove the
inner plexi pane. I haven't had mine all the way out yet but I have "started"
the ring out, and it came rather easily. I'm thinking of drilling a small hole
in the end portion of the ring to make removing the inner pane for cleaning an
easier task.

For the AC, are you sure the thermostat is calling for cooling? On mine the
fan runs when the unit is on, whether calling for cooling or not. YMMV.

Hope this helps,
Matt

Hey RJ:

Where did you get the hubcaps?

Order from Dexter direct?

Oakland Rim and Wheel?

Other?

I could use some without dents.

Subject: Re: Cooper tires

Bob,

I recently ran into the same problem. In mid-July, just prior to departing
on an RVing vacation to Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Sturgis, and
Lewis and Clark's Fort Mandan (replica), I ordered a set of four new
Michelin XCA 700 x 15s from my local SAM's Club. The tires were listed in
the SAM's special order catalog but turned out to be no longer available
from the manufacturer. I was disappointed!

Along with doubt about the quality of GY Marathons I didn't want to use
225/75R15 radials because they have a slightly smaller diameter than 700 x
15s. This change will result in slightly less ground clearance which is a
problem with longer trailers which will drag their tails when
entering/exiting fuel stations and other driveways and ramps.

I didn't want to use the old-fashioned bias ply truck tires on this '84
trailer which will see a lot of highway miles, frequently at high speeds,
and I was not willing to spend $700 for a set of trailer tires from a local
tire retailer so I compromised. I bought a set of BF Goodrich 235/75R15
"XL" tires from SAM's. The XL stands for extra load. That tire was used
extensively several years ago on heavy duty 1/2 ton Ford pickups with GVWR
of up to 6200 pounds. The tires can be inflated to 41 psi at which pressure
they are rated to carry, I think, 2340 lbs. per tire. The set of four was
approximately $300 mounted and balanced with hazard warranty from SAM's.
The tires are not ST special trailer rated which I personally think is a lot
of hype anyway. ST tires supposedly withstand aging and cracking from UV
rays but it was my experience that GY Marathons did not live up to the
claims on a '93 34' A/S. If your trailer will be parked more often than
towed, you may prefer to use ST tires. My usage will wear out the tire
tread before the tires become UV cracked so I installed a non ST tire.

I just returned from a 4300 mile, ten state marathon using those tires with
complete satisfaction and no problems whatsoever. Some will think this is
insane but on a number of occasions, when passing a slow moving 18 wheeler,
I ran up to as much as 90 mph with the trailer in tow. I'm not recommending
such speeds as prudent but my new Dodge-Cummins dually reached that speed so
quickly and easily I was tempted to keep my foot down and see just how fast
it was willing to pull. I considered the wreckage that would result from a
trailer tire blowout at 100 mph so backed off and returned to the speed
limit.
