When do your policies become effective? Immediately after approval by the Board of Trustees, unless the policy relates to rules, procedures, or policies included in the University catalog or, in some cases, employees. Those go into effect with the new academic and fiscal year, which commences on July 1. The approval date remains the date the policy was approved by the BoT, but the effective or implementation date is July 1.
Do you treat certain types of policies differently than others? Academic policies and many of those that impact students go into effect on July 1 after approval. The rule is that if the content of the policy is referred to or included in the University catalog, the implementation date is the same as catalog effective date: July 1. In particular, are you consistent about when you adopt personnel policies to avoid the appearance of retaliation? If a policy impacts faculty employment (rank, tenure, sabbatical, etc.), the policy is implemented on July 1 after approval. Policies affecting only staff employees usually go into effect immediately upon approval.
