Here is how we ideally "schedule" when policies take effect:
1) New or revised Procurement, Accounts Payable, Budget and HR Staffing and Performance policies have an effective date of July 1, the first day of our fiscal year. 2) Payroll and Benefits policies have an effective date of January 1, since they often involve tax information and the tax year. 3) Other policies are effective as approved, which is usually a small number. If we need to push-out the information about a policy change before the information is in effect, I have a consistent formatted text box I use on our policy template, prefaced with "This section of the policy is effective...". We've never had a problem with your third question. -Alyssa Schiffman DePaul University From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rippke, Sheryl L [U CSL] Sent: Tuesday, January 07, 2014 2:37 PM To: '[email protected]' Subject: [acupa-l] Timing of Adopting New Policies Greetings from frigid central Iowa, >From poking around the web, it appears that in most cases universities >implement policies as soon after their final approval as they can be >published. Our University Counsel is asking if other universities have a >different approach, such as implementing a new/revised policy only on the >first day of a new fiscal year, etc. When do your policies become effective? Do you treat certain types of policies differently than others? In particular, are you consistent about when you adopt personnel policies to avoid the appearance of retaliation? Your comments would be most appreciated!
