The tires will not really change their direction unless the angle is shallow
and they hit the curb at an oblique angle.

I never considered column locks to be part of the whole hill parking tires to
curb thing. I always figured they were an anti theft thing.

What keeps the tire pointing towards he curb besides the column lock though?

Same way your grandparents did. Column locks didn’t arrive until 1969.
Turn the wheels into the curb. The tire hitting the curb is what stops it from
rolling..

Wait. If wheel column locks are gone how do I lock the wheel when parked on
a hill?

If you are worried about turning it off while moving push start/stop
button for 3 seconds. Restart is a matter of pushing the start button again.
If it’s running away the key isn’t the first thing I’m reaching for - it’s the
brake. The brakes are always stronger than the engine. If that doesn’t work
push the clutch in or kick the transmission into neutral. No modern vehicle
will grenade itself - the computer turns off the fuel injectors at the real
redline.

Steering wheel column locks went the way of buggy whips - they are no
longer required as long as the lock system meets modern standards and nearly
all manufacturers have removed them from production.

My car at least will start with a dead remote battery - you have to hold
the fob in a specific spot and it will start. I think all of them have some
similar provision. And the car bitches for months about the remote battery
getting low. Yeah, I procrastinate.

Why would you emergency shut off the engine? That sounds absolutely

We are looking to refresh one of our SUVs. Everything seems to be
going push start - which scares me for several reasons:

          1) key fob battery death - leaving you stranded. Apparently with most
vehicles there are hidden keys and slots. Ok.

          2) needing to perform an emergency engine stop at highway speed.
Apparently you can hold the stop button for three seconds (which I might add
can be a very long time and a long distance at 70mph!)

          3) that brings us to 3. Assuming the engine is forced to stop at
highway speed. How do you: a) put the vehicle into ACC mode so the wheel stays
unlocked b) attempt a restart of the engine (while shifted to neutral) while
the vehicle is still moving from previous engine momentum?

Although this may seem trivial. I’ve had 2-3 instances over my 20
years of driving where I’ve either had to dead stick a vehicle into a service
location because of a broken component that died at highway speed, or another
engine issue. In all cases, having to stop the vehicle to attempt an engine
restart would have caused me to get stranded rather than arrive at a location
where the vehicle could be serviced.
