I believe his main motivations for working w/ Google have to do with the massive data-stores and computer power they have, along with a team of smart hardworking people experienced with using these resources.... Google has pluses and minuses like any organization, and although Larry Page is psyched about AGI, one can't say that the organization is seriously deploying its resources in an AGI direction....
