I just love Alan, however odd or awkward my posts he always outdoes me. And no,
Mike and Co., we don't need to read the paper, we have pre-fab objections :)

Now where do I start. First of all , a review paper does not actually owe me or
us anything, as it first of all has to be fair with the original authors etc.
Conversely, if some of the reviewed work is, in one's eye, so bad that it is
funny, it does not reflect on Ben and his work. Even if said work was bad,
which is different from being laughable, both Ben and our audience here deserve
a more proper treatment than I can deliver right now. I did however find the
stated intention of synthesizing the reviewed material to a higher emergent
theory somewhat silly, and I took immediate objection to three different
points, admittedly with a heavy dose of subjectivity on my part
A) as much as I love consciousness, I thought and stated it would be a
distraction, at least for the AGI list
B) just like there is metacognition or shall we say meta-everything, there is
metaattention which is particularly valuable in some psychological work. Being
aware of being aware of being aware ... Is not just a linguistic trick in my
personal experience, and even if it was a trick we would have to admit it is
quite a central trick in our multiverse, such constructions created and keep
creating a lot of the "edge" in our mathematics and epistemology. I did get the
feeling that this meta centrality was being lost in the more ordinary work
reviewed
C) despite me proposing "naturalistic" explanations and interpretations of
things like qualia, I was as offended as I can be (having already conquered the
Olympus of humility) by the informational/attentional focus of the article,
when in fact the dualistic challenge of consciousness, the qualia let's say, is
the more interesting and juicy part.

Up to a point, we could perhaps speak of the intelligence/consciousness
continuum, which is where those information integration views would fit in. As
I proposed in my previous posting, I would rather include the body in the
equation for a more holistic and less laughable "integrated supertheory",
although I realize the word "holistic" already inspires some laughs in certain
circles. Anyway, and I am repeating myself, it is the
body-intelligence-consciousness continuum that we should be working with, and
which is why I am trying to keep one foot in Artificial Life and, soon one
hopes, in Humanoid Robotics.
