I agree these are priorities. I also think that the concept of soul is related to both. But I'm doubtful as to what I gain from trying to explain this. So I'll just sum it up with a few ideas that immediately come to mind and then go run and hide :) First off I'll say that I really respect guys like Stuart Hameroff that have the cajones enough to talk about it scientifically and philosophically, in his way, pertaining to quantum consciousness. Secondly there are many potential explanations of soul, including physical scientific but also with AI. Third, the concept of soul has utility to human civilization. Fourth, soul has utility for individuals and families. Fifth, the word "soul" is a handle to many things similar to the word "consciousness", just not as elaborate. Sixth, soul is an integral part of human culture. Seventh, we really don't know the extent of soul. Eighth, there are many artistic aspects to soul. (maybe this fits into #6) Ninth, There are extensive belief relationships with soul which may have effected human evolution and evolution of intelligence. Tenth, IMO it is better that the concept of soul exists for AGI rather than it not. So, for you just to say that .. well there's no such thing as soul. What do I gain from trying to explain? I predict with a high degree of certainty it to be a waste of energy :) BTW then with your comments about Wolpert's self-model prediction, etc. sure these are commonly understood and flow from Gödel incompleteness but consciousness and soul is not black and white it's shades of gray and color. Prediction is thermodynamically messy and next to prediction is belief. Belief is optimization, avoidance of computation, another route around paradox right? We can plug some of those systemic holes of paradoxical leakiness by using non-crispy truth values but some remain and they are computational quicksand so why not reroute with belief relationships. Sounds simple, no?
