The environment is a challenging test for humanity - not that we have ever been able to control it. We can build our systems that adapt to the environment... do you have air conditioning in your car? Without our "systems" there would definitely be much less of the earth inhabited - think of the billions spent to live in places like Dubai, California ...
Beside, is there really a fitness function? We are the result of millions of Generally Intelligent People doing what they think is best. I find it remarkable that billions survive...
