OK - getting to the bottom of this now... 1) definitely no need for a 24-bit card. 2) If you use MP9 to burn a cdr it will NOT playback as HDCD - presumably this is Microsoft "protecting their investment" 3) If you use any other CD burner it works! I copied a real HDCD AND burnt a disc from a set of old HDCD flacs and they both work - ie playback in HDCD with the light on in MP9!
