At least at my first try it works beautifully!  I can simply cut and
paste the text into a new copy of the file and not bother about dealing
with fixing existing figures.  

It looks like one of my main problems was using Anchor to Character
rather than As Character.  

Now if I can get the pasted charts and graphs to work as well. Still, if
not, it is not a big deal to do real screen shots. Is using screen shots
 a better way in any case?
