I've got the same procedure as Joshua. Maya > OpenCollada > DAE.
This seems to be the only way to get animations out correctly, though even that can be a real hassle. I've also been using 3DStudio Max but it seems to have more problems with animation export. It's fine for still objects, just don't bother for bones animation. Someone really needs to start a proper list on the Wiki with the different ways of getting things into Away3D, and the caveats of each ...
