The ColladaMax plugin I posted earlier exporter has worked just great here,
bone animations and all. I am using it in the production of a project right
now that has a relatively extensive amount of animation.  I don't think my
case is special, either, since I have worked with a few different artists on
unrelated projects who all made use of this plugin without issue.  I am
using Away3DLite, but I would expect the regular version to be even more
reliable.

I don't mean to discount any problems others may have had, since animations
can be tricky and there are many ways to rig a mesh, but definitely try it
out if you prefer Max.  The built in Max Collada exporter is probably a no
go, however, so I would recommend avoiding that.
