The decrease in speed is from the shadow updates, just like you say.
SimpleShadow used without constantly calling apply() and
positionPlane() to redraw the shadow should perform just the same as
the BitmapMeterial method.  Its once you try to leverage the shadow
redrawing functionality that things slow down.  But in still scenes,
or scenes where the shadow does not need to be redrawn, you are
absolutely right Fabrice.
