Well, this is interesting. I wouldn't want to do to others what I don't want to be done to myself. So, I would not participate in a game that would create any kind of damage or harm to any real entity.
Agreed, absolutely
But as long as lets say going to a company's website to retrieve information, and use it for my character's advancement, without any form of prejudice to that website, then that is acceptable.
That's a good example of what is acceptable from my point of view too, yes. What I want to do with these games is to generate questions among players, I'm not here to impose any truth of mine. If unfolding the game and its story can make some people interrogate themselves about the way they look at some event, then I'll be happy. Other way to put it, i'm interested with systems and ideas here, rather than with real entities. Makes sense ? Then, there is also the fact that some players might want to use our tools in some new ways that they'll invent (the whole point about user generated content), and then the question should be discussed regarding what is ethical or not, beyond the obvious (racism, etc) - a code of conduct from the community and for the in-game ?
What I like also is the mix of true and manufactured reality. I understand that it takes resources to pull that off, but the best experience is in the mix of both. What is the reason for being resistant to creating fictitious websites, resources? Money? or something else?
I'm not resistant to creating fictious websites and events, apart from, you're right, the limited resources and money we currently have. But at the same time, one of the strenght of our game could be the blurring aspect (the mix as you say), and I reckon that these fictitious elements don't have to be very numerous as long as they blend with reality, as long as there is a continuum, as long for instance as the players uses some of his time to study reality in order to progress in our fictitious one. But that's just a feeling I have, we'll see how it goes with the first prototype.
