Because that was not working for me.

I could not reliably select the icons with a single click and I
believe that selecting the item with single click is a pre-requisite
for double-click.

Yes, the user may be required to supply their login password.

I'm comfortable with terminal, and believe that mac users should be
familiar with its presence, if not all of its potential, and that
influenced my writeup.

That said, yes, you could unlock the grey J icon and use that instead.
