-my point, exactly. blinky lights sound like like a really great idea, and
signaling with the right arm extended to alert other bikers of your
intention is also a great idea, (not that any responsible biker should ever
be passing you on the right) but the fact remains that these signals were in
fact developed for motorists...so motorists would see them!

I agree that effective communication and predictability is what is
important, and although you can say that the signals "were developed for
motorists" (to use, long ago), they are also something that motorists need
to **see**. In this part of the world, the motorist is seated at the left
side of the car, the closer side to the centre of the road. I submit that
a motorist is more likely to see a right or left turn signal made with the
left arm than the right arm. Ideally, motorists are getting a full view
and paying attention to what's going on from all the way left to all the
way right, but a signal that appears closer to the centre of the motorists
visual field is going to be more noticed than one off to the side.
