Let me tell you the tale of this bridge. It's a story of how
politics and power thwarted an earlier bicycle connection between
Madison and McFarland.
In the 1970s I lived on the east side of Madison. I organized
running events and I wanted a good map of local streets, so I bought
DOT's map. It showed a bridge over the Beltline at Marsh Road, a natural
connection to McFarland and beyond. The problem was there was no such
bridge.
I called DOT and asked why they showed a bridge where there was
none. I was told the bridge (which now exists) was put on the map
because it was planned. But former Assembly Speaker Norman Anderson had
purchased property on Marsh Road for a new home, engineered an
annexation so that his property would remain in his Madison legislative
district and didn't want lots of traffic driving by his new house. So no
bridge for the rest of us.
Until now. Because of the work of Dane County Executive Joe Parisi
and his crew we now have a much better bridge coming.
