My sister-in-law is looking for a Mini Cooper S but the local dealer in Albany is
asking almost $1000 over list as a demand surcharge.

Anybody know of a Mini dealer charging list or under in the Northeast?

Westcester Mini in Westchester has never charged
anything but MSRP since the cars first went on sale.
they're owned by BMW NA, so that's not surprising.
they move a lot of cars & are quite likely to shorter
wait times as well.

my wife got her Cooper S there in August of '02.

Tom,
You might want to swap in a known good battery. The only issue may be
getting the cables to the terminals as BMW evidently pinches pennies by
not making those cables even 1mm longer than necessary to get them on
the terminals. I had a similar no-start on my 94 325ic a while back,
everything checked out per Bentley but it wouldn't start, even with a
jump. I got to the point you're at and I even pulled out the DME and
opened it up to look for anything cooked or broken solder joints etc.
Eventually I tried hooking up the battery from my other car and it fired
right up, I guess the battery had an internal short or something.
Bought a new battery for it and no problems since (well, no starting
problems anyway...)

My '87 325iC's electric fan has quit running when it's supposed to be on. As the
Bentley manual instructs, I jumpered the low-speed connections in the socket that
attaches to the thermostat and the fan came on. I then tried the high-speed
connections, and the fan didn't move, but I could hear the relay clicking. I even
swapped the fan relays in various configurations with others of the same part number
and checked all four fuses mentioned by Bentley, just to be thorough.

The last thing mentioned in the manual is the resistor attached to the fan, which I
don't want to pull out of there until I have a better idea of whether or not it's the
culprit. Anyone?

TIA,

Mike Kozitka

Mike,
More than likely that's your problem, especially if
the resistor is the last component power routes
through before reaching the fan motor. However,
thinking in terms of the circuit, a resistor would be
used to reduce current, thus causing the fan to run at
a lower speed. As you noted, the low speed works, but
the high speed is broken. Since the relay seems to be
working, perhaps the wiring back from the relay to the
fan has a short or is broken somewhere. Since I'm
foggy on details, there was a low speed/high speed
production change in some of the later models which
used a combination lo and hi speed switch, as opposed
to two separate switches in the earlier models.
Perhaps the high speed switch is shot, or the high
speed circuit of the combination switch, whichever one
you have. Other than that, AFAIK, the resistor is
about the only other thing that could be wrong. The
resistor isn't a huge pain to get out, two screws. I
vaguely recall reading the manual about this a while
back and it saying to remove the bumper valance, but I
don't know if that's really necessary.

Of no help,
Brian

The resistor is used on the low speed setting only. The low speed runs
through fuse 3 (15A). The high speed through fuse 18 (30A). Also, just
because the relay clicks, doesn't mean the contacts are good.

I think that I incorrectly referred to the fan-related electrical thing that sticks
out of the radiator as the "thermostat." I meant the 3-prong thing that sticks out on
the side of the radiator, near the top. Thanks.

Hi Group,
Seems like this was discussed at one point, but I couldn't find a
conclusive answer. I was rolling the the interstate today in my
new-to-me 74 Pontiac convertible and a mouse climbed out of the
defroster vent to enjoy the morning breeze. Before I could pull over and
let him off (or maybe teach him to fly :^)) he went back down the vent.
I would like to apply some repellant to chase him and any others off.
Car does not smell like it has a mouse problem, so he may have just
moved in. Anyone seen any products that work?

OBMWC - The M3 gets a day off when the Pontiac sees duty, and is
therefore also a potential mouse risk...

Thanks,

where to get said roof rack?

Thanks,
