Just an FYI-the performance package option was not available until the 2003
model year for the sedan, and '04 for the coupe. Your friends car has the
sport package which came with the M Type 68 wheels.

Is it steptronic or manual?

Interesting. I thought the performance package came out in 2003 on
the sedan and not on the coupe until half-way through 2004. Could you
have meant "sports package"?

I'm sorry to ask this...

I'm helping a friend get new tires for her 1991 325iC. She has 15 x
6.5 wheels, so we are looking at 205/50-15 tires, HR or VR rated.

Kumho tires look inexpensive and and have good survey results on
tirerack.com. I remember seeing comments on this list before about
them, but for the life of me, I can't remember what folks have said.
I'm looking at the ASX (WR-rated) for $64, 712's (VR) for $59 and 711's
(HR) for $45.

Dare I ask, does anyone have opinions, comments or war stories about
Kumho tires?

TIA,
-tdc

I just got a set of 712s for my e30 ragtop and they ride quietly and
handle predictably. That being said, on the autox course they set up
quite a howl for me and don't have near the stick that my old bald S-03s
did. They are much more inexpensive though.
I'll have to go back to my rally style turns to burn off more tread in
a hurry so I can get back to something stickier. :)

I currently have 712's on all three of my BMW's. I've even done 2
drivers schools in the E30 with them and they held up pretty well. No
complaints really.

I think if your friend is picky she? might not like the flat spotting
if the car is parked for very long because you can feel it through the
steering wheel, it goes away so just let her know.

I beat the living tar out of my 712s at Putnam and they held up very
well to the abuse. I was surprised as I wasn't too impressed with them
on the street when I drove aggressively but after that school I would
definitely recommend that tire. Price, as Rob mentioned, is the key
here, you get a lot of performance for what you pay. I somehow doubt
skinny 205 width tires on 6.5" rims will tramline much if any but I
could be wrong.

Carlos.

I have about 15,000 on my 712s.
They have become rather noisy and tramline quite a bit on the highway now.
They also flat-spot when sitting for a long time.
I drive my car about once a week and you can hear and feel the flat
spots as they warm up and round back out.

They were cheap and for that I cannot complain, but I would not buy them
again.

225/50-16 711s on an e28 535i. They handled well, tramlined pretty bad, and
were shot at 17,000 miles - no track time.

The 712s are a lot of tire for the money. I experimented
with a set and found them to balance easily, ride smoothly
and quietly, and handle extraordinarily well for the price.
They are a very good-handling tire.

Note that I have mentioned cost twice in the above
statements. I took them off my M5 for one reason only; I
wanted more performance out of the tires than the Kumhos
could give when compared to top-tier rubber like the
Bridgestone S-03, Michelin Pilot, and Toyo TS-1.

I was more than satisfied with the Kumhos considering what I
paid and for any car that had performance levels below the
requirements I had, I would definitely consider them again.
You get a lot more than you paid for with these tires... but
don't forget, you did not pay a lot.

Your friend will be quite happy with the Kumhos on the
325iC.

Many thanks to Ed MacVaugh, and Rich Dorffer for their guidance, with the
benefit of which the job is now done and everything works as it should.

Thanks guys.

A few weeks ago, I was in the midst of replacing my trailing arm bushings
which were determined to stay in place.

Jim Ochi came to my rescue via email, and on a Saturday night at that!

I thanked Jim privately, and want to again express my gratitude. The
UUCDIGEST is truly in a league of its own.
