Guys,
Sorry to hear about the rotten luck a few of you have had with the
insurance companies.
But consider this: out of 1,000+ ? subscribers to this list, only 3-4 had
(what seams like) valid complaints about your insurance companies (USAA,
Erie, Allstate).
I do not know what companies the rest of us are using, but I've been happy
with my MetLife house/cars' policy that had paid out on four (4) car claims
and 2 house claims over the last 7 years. Only the last $1,200 auto claim
was my fault. But since it was charged against 'comprehensive' part of the
policy => no surcharge.

I've had numerous "interviews" with police officers, but zero tickets on my
record. I work the system.
I've kept all my discounts on all policies through the years (knock on
wood).

Informally, I've more good than bad things said about State Farm and a few
smaller others, the name of which escape me right now.
Perhaps those of us who have had accidents and kept their 'good driver'
should speak up NOW to recommend our companies to others?

Michael,
I do not doubt your experience.
Perhaps you, and others, should look beyond Allstate ?

Sorry to hear that, Rich.
May be it's a blessing in disguise and you can finally move to a reputable
company ?
Or perhaps all OH insurance policies are super-anal, just like the OH cops?

That must be Mike F, aka 'da crusher.
For everyone in the dark, this guy has crashed every one of the 7-8
vehicles he has ever owned. Most were totalled. Most were his fault, though
you'll never hear him admit it.
If there was ever a valid case for dropping someone's insurance coverage,
it's that guy. I can't believe he is still insured while others on this
list are dropped.
Perhaps Farmers could be added to the list of "lenient" policy carriers?

IMHO,

I agree.
I probably would not temp the fate to make claims on windshield cracks and
curbed rims, unless I knew for sure those were non-surchargable.

> and again, I would not report a no fault unless you need the
> assistance of your own company in legal matters. No insurance

This is the part that makes NO sense.
First of all, does anyone really think their accident will go unnoticed by
your insurance company if you only deal with the other party's insurance?
If you file a claim ANYWHERE, it immediately goes into one of many
industry-wide claims' databases. The next time your company updates your
profile, guess what will turn up?

Next: how many people you know readily admit their own fault? At anything?
Now imagine this: the other person's insurance company has a choice between
finding its policy holder at-fault and paying you, or finding YOU at fault
and not paying out. Hmmm.... which way do you think they might be tempted
to rule?

I'll share my personal experience: in 3 clearly not-at-fault accidents, the
other parties' initially absconded all responsibility for their actions. My
insurance company (MetLife), whose own interests were aligned squarely with
mine, went to bat for me. On two occasions, they had convinced the other
insurance company to pay up (I believe things went to arbitration at least
once). The third time, the trucker's insurance company flat out refused to
pay (guy had initially fled the scene, then claimed he was never it Texas)
and MetLife decided to cut its losses. I never received my $250 deductible
back.

All in all, I would have been WAY worse off had I not thrown the weight of
MY insurance company behind MY claims.

I'm not sure about political organizations, but as long as we live with a
hyper-active legal system, some form of insurance against it is all but
mandatory.

Group,

Couple quick questions on the navigation system on a 2002 model year BMW
(a 2002 e39 M5 if it matters) -

Is this newer (compared to my previous experience with the nav system in
a 2001 e46 M3) system still CD-based or did they make the jump to DVD in
2002 M5's?

If so, I assume its Navteq (www.navteq.com) for updated maps? Anyone
have a better source for picking up maps, other than eBay (not much
selection there right now...)?

Does the nav-CD have to go in the CD changer in the trunk, or what?
anything else anyone can tell me about the CD/nav unit in this car? Any
websites with more information on the nav system specifically?

Thanks in advance...

Recall Campaign 04V-183,
Install Retaining Clips on Front Spring Struts

Model: E39 (5 Series)
Affected Vehicles: E39 vehicles which were produced from 27 Feb 1996
through 31 Jan 1997.
--------------------------

If you do not get a recall letter from BMW, send me an email at
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject "UUC E39 Recall". Include
the last 8 digits of your VIN (not the production date), and I will run
it to see if you're affected.
I'll run one batch of VINs per day after work (6:30ish PDT) for the next
week or so. Please don't distribute this offer to other lists - I work
12-13hrs/day already.

Other ways for E39 owners to determine if they need the work are
- call a local dealer's service dept and give them the VIN numbers,
- register your vehicle on your local dealer's website (we have
MyServiceCenter) and search for open campaigns.

My '97 328ic has about 90K miles on it - the front and rear shocks are
original, do not leak and show no obvious signs of being tired - no bouncing
etc.

Is there any good reason to replace the shocks, or can I wait for signs of
shock failure, and in the meantime apply my $ to those other repairs that
invariably arise?

Thanks.

How well do you want the car to drive? The shocks might be "OK" or even
"pretty good" but they certainly have lost some of their intended damping.

Roger,

A little story -

I replaced the shocks in my wife's 93 325 when it had about 70K miles on it.
I didn't tell her, she thought they were fine. I did it on a weekend she
was out of town.

After the her first drive in the car post shock replacement she said "What
did you do to my car? It handles so much better, like when it was new".

The damping function of the shocks slowly degrade over time/miles. I doubt
you've felt the difference, but if you replace them it'll be a night and day
feel.

BTW - at 90K I'd start thinking about a preventative replacement of the
radiator if it hasn't been replaced yet. The neck on drivers side of the
radiator is going to break in about 10 minutes ;-)

Marco

I agree with Gary and Marco. Replace them. You may think they are
fine, and would most likely be wrong. I just did my wifes car with
110,000 miles and it made a huge difference.

I just finished installing the Sach's suspension on my '95 525i and love
the feel. Now I need to do an alignment and order some new tires. The
two I am considering are the Continental ContiExtremeContact and the
Yoko AVS dB S2, both in 225 60 R15. Anyone have anything good or bad to
say about either of the two? How about another good choice that I missed?

I drove a friend's 320i (almost identical to mine) with 225/50R16s shod with
Conti Sport Contact rubber. The car understeered like a pig, I almost crashed
it in a traffic circle - it just wouldn't turn! After that I took him for a
spin in my car with 205/60R15 Yokohama AVS dB. Day and night difference. It
could be that his suspension was shot but to me it seemed like it was the
rubber. The guy also said himself, that his original 15s shod with Pirelli
P7000 were better - and those were also 205 width. After that experience I'd
stay away from Continental - they last forever but there's a downside. Test
drive a car with the rubber you intend to buy...
