In any case, the construction of the Hella bar is such that the incandescents sit in a tunnel in the bar which limits the angle to straight behind anyway. -Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 21:00:52 -0400 From: "David A. NAPA, or any good auto paint store can match the paint. I painted a Buick bumper cover recently, with very good results. The flex agent is important on bumper covers. It makes the paint into micro-foam bubbles, and so remains flexible. You can't see the bubbles but that is how the flex agent works. Base /clear is where it is at for fine paint work, as you can fix the mistakes with the base, wet sand, mist coat and then clear coat, which can also be wet sanded. A bumper cover is small enough that you should be able to shoot it well enough that you don't need to wet sand. 1000 grit will cover a multitude of sins however, but I didn't need to get into that with the bumper cover. The whole car I painted, however, was quite a sandingf and buffing excercise. BTW Metallics can't be wet sanded. Actually you can, but then you need to mist another coat on over them. Then you clear, which can be wet sanded. Lots of paints can be color matched either base clear, or single stage. The base /clears are urethanes, the single stages are called acrylic enamel, however, if you dig deep in Dupont's website, they will admit that acrylic enamels, when used with hardeners, are also considered urethanes. Hardener is always used in all painting, otherwise the stuff takes a few days to kick. Base /clear supplies to paint my bumper cover were in the $200 range for base, clear, flex, hardener, reducer, etc. I like to use a little fish eye reducer additive too. I called three paint places, the first two insisted the color was only available base clear, the local NAPA mixed me a quart of single stage metallic Blue for $30. I had reducer, that is $20 a gallon, hardener is about $10 and flex about $15 or so, as is fish eye, so you can see single stage is about 1/3d the cost. I really like Dupont Centari for what it is worth, they couldn't match it single stage, Martin Senor ( NAPA ) could mix my color single stage. My results were as good as the original paint, so you won't be seeing an obvious repaint if you lay down a good coat. Keep some big sheets of cardboard around for shooting to adjust the gun, you want more of an oval pattern with the HVLP gun than the traditional fan that we used on the siphon guns. I like about 40 lbs at the gun, which is more than they recommend for environmental purposes, but if you talk to painters, they use a lot of pressure to get a bunch of material on. I have to actually put the gun down and walk around a while while the paint flashes, as I have no patience. About 3 coats should do it..when it is 'almost perfect.'.stop.. you'll only f##$$ it up from there. Keep the gun moving parallell to the surface, and move it about three feet per second. One tip a painter gave me, only shoot in one direction when you are a beginner, the good guys shoot back and forth, they do it every day..we don't . It was a great tip. Start the stroke before you get to what you are painting, pull the trigger so you get just air, then paint comeing out, then onto the surface you want to paint, move smoothly, about 8-10" away from the surface, all the way across the surface, and keep the trigger down until you move all the way off the surface. Start at the bottom, and work up, misting lightly for the first coat. On the second and third you will see the gloss forming, keep a " wet edge" so the gloss is uniform over the whole surface, but not so wet it runs..a fine line here! Single stage is cheaper, less hassle, and generally less mixing and work to use. I use a cheap HVLP gravity cup gun from NAPA for $100.00 or so, I did a whole 735i with it. Results were excellent. I used single stage there too, again for cost reasons, however if I do a whole car again I will probably go b/c as I like the ability to fix the mistakes. For small repairs and matching, I like single stage acrylic urethane. The single stage paints are called " Fleet paints" and they are cheaper, yet still Urethane, and very hard, shiny and long lasting. I did my e32 two years ago, it still looks great. I used Dupont Centari. For prep on your primed bumper cover, I would use grey scotch brite pads, from the paint store, scuff, wash with 3m adhesive remover, or dupont " prep-sol" and then shoot the paint. You will get great results on something as small as a bumper cover. Small is easier, whole cars are kind of hard. I hope this helps, I am not sure if you are planning to shoot this yourself or have it done. The cost to have it done or do it yourself would probably be the same, however, I find paint work to be very satisfying, and once you have the equipment, repairs become real cheap later. My wife actully smashed up my fender lastr fall with the truck, I cam home, banged it out, sanded, primered, bondoed, sanded, primed, and shot a mathced coat of British Racing Green Centari left over form the repaint, and had it fixed the same day, for no money! Much of the cost of painting a car is the labor to prep before you paint. Then, the cost/labor application of the paint - - which is the same for cheap paint as for high quality paint. Apply the best quality paint you can afford so that you aren't looking at a "re-do" in 2-3 years! Don't ask me how I know!!!! Harvey The box said "Requires Windows 95, or better." I've driven a small dump truck with hydraulic brakes, and they were very touchy when unloaded. I had a bus with air brakes, and they really didn't feel any different. Touchy, but very driveable. And nothing compares with the sound of the air parking brake.
