My cruise control switch (steering column) fell apart. Anyone have a
working spare sitting around you could part with? Well, I thought it was
worth a try.

2000 e46 323i sedan ~78k miles
Premium package car, therefore has the silly 'auto' HVAC setting which I
never use (always on manual mode).

Yesterday and today (yes I hoped it would go away overnight but it didn't)
the HVAC system while in manual mode went on the fritz, the fan speed has a
mind of its own as if it is in 'Auto' setting. I can change the temp
setting and the fan speed changes again, like it is in manual mode. This
smells of a failing control head (probably $$$) in my mind. Any ideas,
anyone BTDT?? Also, anyone know a ball park HVAC control unit replacement
cost? I hate to 'throw parts' at anything without a proper diagnosis but I
can just hear my dealer go 'ka-ching' when I schedule an appointment for
this one! Then they'll sit on it for a few days, order a control unit and
charge me twice what I could have thrown at it with a new control head.....

Help!

Cheers,
Chet Dawes

Nope, I was just there for three days last weekend with NASA. FWIW,
they have ground down the kerbs so they are pretty flat which makes
them useable now and really widens up the track.

Chet,

It's probably the final stage resistor pack failing in the fan controller
thing, which is a common failing on earlier E46s (my 2000 328Ci had it).
It's relatively inexpensive even for the dealer to do it, and there are
some writeups out there for DIYers, where it's really cheap. I believe
the control head has fault codes which will confirm or deny this.

I believe the part is in the $70 area. You need to drop the glovebox
and take out one of the vent control stepper motors, I believe. This
is a common problem but so far I've lucked out and not had it yet, so
I can't help with the exact procedure.

Kazuto/Andre,
Thank you for the responses! After some hints from here and subsequent
research it does indeed sound as if the final stage unit is the problem. All
the write-ups I've seen have the exact same or very very similar symptom
description. I'll get on with replacement right away and report back with
resolution.
This group is absolutely great!

1. I have a part which I think is from either an E36 or an E30, but it does
not look familiar. It has a half-inch by one inch socket at one end with
two recessed pins, and an 8 inch lead with a small white plastic holder and
stud on the other end. The envelop has a tag that states:

OUR: BM 34359058889
OEM: 10-03
ORD: 0841088

2. I have two oxygen sensors for a E36, which I bought on ebay. Is there a
way to test these to see if they are good before installing them in my car?

Its a front brake pad sensor for an E30.

You can check oxygen sensors by heating with a reducing flame while watching
a high impedance volt meter connected to the output. When the sensor heats
up, the voltage will rise to 0.8 or 0.9. When the torch is taken away,
oxygen hitting the sensor will cause an immediate drop to 0.2 or so.

Oxygen sensors wear out. The above check will not tell you if it is working
properly, only that it works sorta. I prefer the lake test for used
sensors.

I am looking for a Schroth reseller, who won't bang me $8.95 for shipping
out four seat belt harness grips (pins that go through the end of the straps
that you pull to tighten). HMS wants the $8.95. eBay doesn't have any.

How much do you suppose the shipping should be? Where are you located?

Got nailed on the way home on my local 35 mph parkway that everyone goes 50 on
until the lasers come out...First ticket in 10 years [52 in a 35]. I wanted to
get a refresher from anyone versed in current VA statutes. Last ticket, I
actually got the sentance suspended by going to a drivers improvement class
[after paying a lawyer WAAAY too much...potential reckless driving on your
record will do that].

The officer I talked to this time mentioned that he thought it was taken after
the fact simply to credit points against my driver's record.

I'd obviously rather have the former. Does anyone with VA traffic court
expertise know if I can request the sentance suspension in court since it has
been over 5 years since my last ticket?

TIA,
