I recently did this job on my '90 535. Remove the outer rods and center rod
as one unit. No need to take them apart since I'm assuming you are replacing
all the rods. True? You can use a pickle fork on the pitman arm if you are
reusing it, but why not replace it too?

(Any advice on removing the center tie rod ball joint from the pitman arm on
a 90 525?)

During a recent ignition switchechtomy, I had to R/R a covered weight from
the steering column on my 2000 528. This thing flopped around a bit on a
single bolt. What is this for? Steering feel/feedback?

I originally posted this last week or so and never saw it on the digest. Did
we have a server hiccup recently?

Thanks,

I'd inspect the external shift linkage to make sure nothing is hanging up,
but failing that it sounds like recycled transmission time.

Say, do they happen to know anyone with a lift? <g>

Howdy, all. Sorry for the off-topic, but was wondering if anyone had an
idea of the wholesale price for a 2005 AMG MB CL65 (yeah, the ridiculous
2-door whale with the twin-turbo V-12 with just way too much torque).
Manheim or other auction data? If anyone has a lead on a nice one, that'd
be appreciated too.

Thanks,

OK, per manheim internet MMR, here are the prices. Mileage is the most
important factor:

Below: 78,977 (15k miles)
Avg: 105,790 (10k miles)
Above: 132,603 (5k miles)

Scary car. Hard to sell. Pretty broad range there on the prices.

One of the most storied automotive films ever, er, filmed, Claude Lelouch's
C'etait un Rendezvous has been cloaked in mystery since the moment it was
released. Was it one of Lelouch's F1 racing pals behind the wheel of what
often was assumed to be a Ferrari 275GTB? Was it Lelouch himself? No, no
and yes. No, it wasn't a racing driver, the car was a Mercedes 6.9 that the
director still owns (the Ferrari was dubbed in to add to the thrill factor),
and yes, it was Lelouch behind the wheel.

What's more, the girl at the end is Claude's babymomma, and he did in fact
have one spotter, when he exits the second tunnel near the Louvre. The
spotter was supposed to radio the driver in case there was traffic after a
blind turn. Lelouch got no signal, so he hammered it. It turns out later
that the walkie-talkie was broken.

The Ferrari was dubbed in after the 6.9's own score was deemed to be
not-so-exciting (although, due to the Merc's air suspension, it made an
ideal camera car for the touchy gyroscopically-balanced camera), and as
Lelouch posits, the run really did happen, but the Ferrari noises make it
more exciting. What's more, as Herr Roy -- our tipster and translator on
this one -- points out, yes, there are a few glitches in terms of shift
timing in the film (he counts three), but the fact that 98% of them are
right-on is frankly pretty amazing.

How'd they do it? Our guess is a chassis dyno on a soundstage, but that's a
card that Lelouch has yet to reveal.

=======================

And for those of you who STILL don't believe that it was a 6.9 Merc instead
of a Ferrari:

I had a friend just replace his Continental Sport
Contact II's with the Goodyears. His only complaint
has been he feels the Goodyear sidewall is much softer
and he prefers the more responsive Conti. So, if you
want a nicer ride the Goodyear's may be the way to go
and if you want a bit crisper response there are other
options. BTW, the new So3 replacement from
Bridgestone, RE-01R's, are on intro sale at Tirerack:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes.jsp?make=Bridgestone&model=Potenza+RE-01R

The Goodyears are on special too:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes.jsp?make=Goodyear&model=Eagle+F1+GS-D3

My experience has been that tires with the real
directional grooves, like on the Goodyear, seem to get
loud with wear. I could be wrong but that has been my
impression.

I have one on the shop floor with the same problem. It's on the floor
because nobody has bothered to toss it in the scrap bin.

2nd gear has blown. Drain the oil and you're likely to find chunks of gear.

I shared the youtube like with another list and promptly got this tidbit
back... the 2005 Isle of Mann... It has some incredible shots (and you will
like or not like the music dep. if you like metal).
Since several listers have bikes, this *might* be of interest :)

http://media.putfile.com/Isle-of-Mann-TT-2005

As for required P-car content (even though its Friday), a friend of mine who
stopped over for dinner last night just got a nice 2003 996 Cab 3 days ago... I
couldn't really show him how to drive it properly due to

a) rain
b) night time (and deer-type criters that can really
put a damper on 8/10's exit ramp fun)
c) having an adult beverage with dinner
d) not having my wallet on me when he tossed me the keys and asked "where do
you want to go?" for some fun while we were outside looking at it...

He's already planning on heading up to a DE at Pocono Sat. (not signed up, just
to check-it-out :)

As for "Rendezvous," well, I just had to play that little clip for him, on the
big-screen, with the stereo cranked to a modest 8 when we got back... :D

Happy Friday all!

Subject: OT: Winter Tire Question
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Its cross-post day today... being time to shop for winter tires as my old
Blizzak WS50s for the Bambi Tenderizer (Ford Countour) are more suitable for
racing slicks than slick snow.

The question I have for the wisdom of the lists is this:
for a whole $6 less should I get the Dunlop Winter Sport M3s ($314/set)
or stick with the Blizzaks WS-50s for $320/set.

I'm currently driving ~100mi /day and about 90% is highway
There are a few large hills on the highway.
the area is Northern NJ.

I'd prefer to give up ultimate traction (as the winters in NJ just aren't that
bad) for a slightly sportier response (the WS-50s are *very* squishy, and can
get 'entertaining' under 'brake-test' emergency-avoidence maneuvers...

Being Friday, I welcome all comments, questions, and esp. snarky remarks ;)
