This would replace my '96 F350 crewcab dually diesel truck. Moving the trailer around the storage lot has always been an adventure with the truck so I know it would be impossible with the RV. Soooo, I've been comtemplating an X5 or X3 to schlep the trailer around town w/o the race car in it and to also use the X5/X3 as a "toad" (towed behind the RV) for the times when I don't need the race car and trailer. This brings me to the questions: What's the towing capacity for the X5 (4.4 and 3.0) and for the X3 (3.0 and 2.5)? Can the X5/X3 be flat towed at highway speeds? Thanks for your help. I'm guessing not without modification. It doesn't appear in the Dinghy Towing guide. http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/output.cfm?ID=760501 Good luck, and don't get sticker shock looking at those diesel pushers. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 09:22:47 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] Subject: E36 M3 same tire size at all 4 corners? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi everyone, I've done some surfing and most info I found is for track suspensions, so: If I have an M3 with stock suspension and am looking to commonize to a 17x8 wheel width, what does experience tell me about tire sizing (not wanting to get into any clearance issues, fender rolling, etc.)? Do I go with 235/40, 235/45, 245/40, or 245/45 at all 4 corners? Or do I still fit staggered sizes front vs. rear on the 8" wheels (many of the stock-sized tires rim width recommendations will overlap at 8")? I'd prefer to run a standard width front and rear if I can and thought standardizing would just dial out some understeer, but if common wisdom recommends otherwise... Thanks for sharing your insight. Please feel free to send me a link if there's a site that discusses this. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> If this is just for road use, I'd suggest going back to the 1995 spec, 235/40 all around as a compromise. The 235/45 and 245/45 will be significantly taller. The 245/40 or 225/45 will more closely match your present size (they are your present sizes, no?), but I don't know if the 245/40 will easily fit in front. This seems like a lot of expense now to save a little on tires in the future. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mike, The first time I changed from staggered to the same size tires I chose 17X8 IFG wheels with 245/40 Yok AVS sports on all 4. This was the perfect setup to dial out understeer and maximize "efficient" tire wear via rotate-ability. It also gave the car a much more direct steering feel (to me). I had no issues with rubbing on my (then) stock suspension, and did not need to roll the fenders. I don't know what the "common wisdom" you speak of is. Now, I've got 17x9" SSR GT2 wheels with 245/40 Michelin PS2s on a car setup with coilovers and -2.8 camber in the front for which I do run 10mm spacers and did roll the fenders (rear). Hope this helps. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 235/40 was the size for '95 M3's with 7.5" wheels all around. they went to staggered 225/45 & 245/40 for '96+ in order to dial in a bit more understeer. there were other changes as well, control arm bushings, steering rack, something else I forget. I would go with 235/40 and be done with it unless you want more rubber on the road for the track or auto-x or something. as long as the offset of the wheels is correct for an E36, I don't believe running 235/40's will cause any issues unless you've got extreme lowering, but I'm not an E36 expert. the BBS fitment for 8x17's for an E36 is 38mm offset, both the 7.5" & 8.5" factory wheels are 41mm offset. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks to Rich, Dinah, and Paul who e-mailed me offline (sorry if I'm leaving anyone out - I receive in Digest mode so have only seen replies I'm copied directly on). Consensus seems to be that same size at all 4 corners is fine (allows for rotating and reduces understeer, which I'm looking for); either 235/40, 235/45, or 245/40 on 17x8 are all acceptable choices from a clearance standpoint. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 245/40 on the 17x8 make a nice fit all around. Good idea to be sure of the front wheel offset before buying anything. In the 35 - 41mm range should give a safe fit. Also check the specs on the particular brand of tire, section width varies between brands. Thanks! Also be aware you CAN run 17x8.5" wheels all around, as long as they are stock offset (41mm, IIRC). No spacers required. I, and several others, have this set up on our E36 M3s. I've been running stock 8.5" Contour wheels up front for 6+ years, and several different tire brands, all 245/40/17. Stock suspension (except sway bars). You can of course verify this will fit on your particular car by putting rear wheels on front & front on rear and taking a CAREFUL drive around the block - beware the oversteer :-) BTDT.
