Hi Gang,

Well... I fixed my problem. For months now I have had an intermitant problem
with my Bmw. It only happens after an hour of driving. occurs for a few
seconds and then all is well again.

Car: 1997 e36 323i german spec model. 170 Hp, 2.5L six, five speed. 200K
kilometers.

First time it happend I thought I had a bad coil pack. Then I noticed when
the engine would buck it felt like I only had 50% Hp. Then like someone flicked
a switch to the on position the car would heal itself. The engine would also
just stall out at a traffic light. No warning, but would always crank and
restart. I also noticed a slightly rough idle(like a miss sort of) and loss of
power bellow 3K rpms. No wanring lights - my German spec model has only OB1,
not
OB2 like in the states. Sometimes I would notice the loss of a tach signal(ie
the tach needle would go to zero, or down quickly, then back up as the engine
regained power).

Anyway... the problem has become more and more common and I had some friends
at the local BMW dealer read the fault codes. I had this done before but no
codes were found. Now since the problem(?) is more common, there was a fault
for
the camshaft sensor - no signal.

This "Imfamous" camshaft sensor" fixed my problem. Just FYI.

take care

This isn't completely off topic, since this car is more a less a BMW. I
bought an 03 S and it has only one key. These keys are laser cut and are
basically a BMW key. Now, is there ANY alternative to getting these keys
made cheaper than have the local BMW/Mini dealer do it? They want almost
200 bills for a key for this sucker. Anyone gotten a key for their BMW
anywhere else? I wasn't sure if there was some type of service available,
etc. Probably not, because of the inherent security issue of making these
keys.

AFAIK, the only place you can get them is from the dealer, it isn't
just a mechanical key there is some sort of electronic anti-theft
device inside the handle.

Just checked with a local locksmith that I've had good luck with in the past
(crazy Alfa swiss cheese keys, etc.) that I thought could handle it. No
dice.

There are two different master keys, for before, and after, 07/04
production.

One is $119, the other is $115, so I'd find a different dealer.

Not only is there an anti-theft device, but the BMW/Mini key recharges its
battery through the ignition switch (or so says the dealer), so remember to
switch off the key your using with your spare occasionally...

Subject: e46 3-er Wagon - Roof rack rails removable??
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Listers,
We're seriously considering a 323iT or 325iT as our next vehicle purchase.
Since I don't live in ski country, there is plenty of room for my bike, etc.
inside the wagon I have no real need for the factory roof rack rails.
Has anyone seen an e46 wagon sans rails? Pictures perhaps? Is it even
possible, or will there be huge 'holes' in the roof such that it does not make
sense? My last trip to Europe saw lots of e46 wagons, but all had the
monsterous roof rails, I figured if I catch a glimpse anywhere it might be
Europe......
I'm not beyond buying some blank panels if such things exist. And I'd like it
to be reversible.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

I considered doing this early on my 01 iT. When I had a friend
Photoshop a car without it (as well as subsequently seeing European
photos and videos), I decided it looked too "bald" without them, so I
decided to keep them. If you decide to do this, you will need to buy
new full-length trim strips after removing the rails and the trim
strips between the stanchions.

The rails are optional in most European markets, and there is a kit
available to retrofit them on, so I presume the procedure is
reversible both ways.

Ralph Warren's M3 wagon has the roof rails removed. I agree with Kaz ---
it looks too bald, but to each his own. Here are some pictures:

Check the Roundel letters to the editor a while back. There's a
letter from Tom Berg of Santa Fe, NM, on this topic. The rails
remove easily (torx), and replacement continuous strips are available
from BMW in primer or painted. I'll forward separately a jpg of the
letter with part numbers.

I just picked up a wreck that I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with
ultimately. Likely it will be parted out, but I'm trying to determine what the
original options were. Can anyone run the VIN for me? I already know the
carfax, I'm looking for the original options list from BMW.
