This may be a little premature, but I figured I would start asking about
things now.

My E30 has failed emissions again. I tried running the chemistry set through
the engine (injecctor cleaner, ventil sauber), running it hard and testing
it hot, but I got no change in my emissions numbers. The car is failing with
high NOx.

The valves are all set correctly, the O2 sensor looked good when I put the
meter to it. The car runs great. I got 29 MPG and change on 1500mi round
trip not two months ago.

So, it is going to the state certified shop to see what they say it needs. I
suspect it will be the catalyst. The car has an aftermarket catalyst from
the last time I went through this. That catalyst is four years old and did
actually fail its test two years ago, but making sure the catalyst was hot
got it to pass with a good margin. This year, no such luck.

So, if it comes down to the catalyst again, which one should I go with? I
would love to go with a factory one, but, wow they are proud of them.

I hear good things about DEC, and I think it is what BavAuto sells, but does
anyone have any actual experience with them?

I also see other makers (Eastern, Catco, Magnaflow, etc); any thoughts on
those?

Shouldn't a catalyst last longer than 3-4 years?

Joe,
I think DEC makes the best of the aftermarket bunch. I used a Catco on
my old vert that did not have the same construction/material properties
of the DEC I put on my iX...which was also an iX specific part (middle
mandrel bend was sharper than a regular e30 due to the transfer case/
front drive shaft up there). I got it from some vendor down in Alabama I
recall, for about $400.

If the rest of the pipes look Ok I have heard of others just fitting a
Magnaflow Cat unit welded into the pipes, but I always preferred to
replace the whole shebang.

cheers!

Wouldn't high NOx be a lean mixture? Aka; a vacuum leak? Which would explain
the no change in numbers despite cleaning it up and testing hot?

Bad cats would be a high Hydrocarbons or CO, right?

3 way cats do all 3 pollutants, but the fuel mix must be right at stoichio.
At idle there are low levels of NOx from the engine, but under load they
rise. It would be useful to know more detail about the high NOx numbers,
and if the HC and CO were very low or barely passing.

All the number were higher, but only the NOx was over the limit. The numbers
were also very close to the bad cat/cold cat numbers.

I have redone all the hoses and gaskets on the top side of the engine. At
this point, I think that leave the front and read main seals. Also, wouldn't
the engine running in closed loop compensate for a vaccum leak? I thought
that is what the oxygen sensor was supposed to do, keep the mix correct.

Today I picked up a 97 M3 coupe with 67k miles, red over black, sunroof
delete, 5 speed, BBS RS wheels and factory wheels both shod in tires. It is
more money, but it would make a fantastic track car or daily driver (VERY
clean car)...it is also a 1 owner, all records/books/window sticker/keys
car. If he wants to pay some more dough, have him call me.
