Or I should say:  Inserting something moves existing stuff to the right.  
(Appending is, of course, 'adding to the file end'.)

  It's like doing it in one step rather than two.  The text or whatever you're 
over-writing is automatically being deleted/replaced by your new input.  This 
facility exists in Microsoft word, and probably in other common text- or 
word-processing programs as well.  (Inserting something leaves existing stuff 
alone.)

    I am not sure why an overwrite command would be used.  You can 
    use Ctrl comma to delete a character, and then put the right 
    letter back in.  That's about the best way I know to do it.
