It's like doing it in one step rather than two.  The text or whatever you're 
over-writing is automatically being deleted/replaced by your new input.  This 
facility exists in Microsoft word, and probably in other common text- or 
word-processing programs as well.  (Inserting something leaves existing stuff 
alone.)

  I am not sure why an overwrite command would be used.  You can 
  use Ctrl comma to delete a character, and then put the right 
  letter back in.  That's about the best way I know to do it.
