I have had several hard lockups due to IDE SCSI as well. I have had
other
problems such as errors, failure to read the ATAPI CD-ROM, etc.

Primary box: VA Workstation
Kernel: 2.2.16-19 and 2.4.0-2.4.3.
Hardware: VA box with ATAPI CD-ROM, YAMAHA SCSI CD-R. Hard disks are
IDE
and SCSI. SCSI is AIC7xxx. CPU: Dual PIII/800, 256M RAM.
O/S: RedHat 7.1 (was 6.2).

Second box: Dell PIII/600, 128M RAM, ATAPI DVD, ATAPI ACER CD-R

1) Attempt to read a CD-R or CD-ROM using XCDOAST on the CD-ROM drive
locked up the box several times. This was a hard lockup (no kbd,
no mouse, etc.). I have not seen this since I moved to RH 7.1.

2) Attempt to load RH 7.1 failed due to inability to read a CD-R in the
DVD. Manual boot and manual copy of the file, followed by manual
install from the hard disk fixed the problem and RH 7.1 load
succeeded.

2) CD-R verify error loop: If I try to verify a CD-R using the ATAPI
CDROM drive in my box, sometimes about 1/2 way through and start
getting several errors a second. I can't kill it and have to
reboot.

Overall, I have experienced weirdnesses with IDE-SCSI that have made
use of my ATAPI CD-ROM a pain.

Cheers,

If Microsoft Built Cars: Every time they repainted the
lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car.
Occasionally your car would just die for no reason, and
you'd have to restart it, but you'd just accept this.
