True - but it can also be effective if done right. What I think most parents miss is the "Set up". You just can't hit and expect it to be effective. Just plain hitting provokes the playground response to hit back. Hitting/spanking/whatever should be a planned punishment like any other - even if that plan is short. Both of my kids have been swatted. But before I do I tell them about it, then I count to three. After "three" they got the swat. In very short order only the counting was needed well over 99% of the time. (With that very occasional carry-through to reinforce things.) My father's case was similar - my grandfather used the belt. Just the action of unbuckling would deal with most problems. It's all very Skinnerian but it seems to work for us.
