I know a few people who've done CrossFit, including my wife. From what I
gather there is a little bit of an explosion on CrossFit over the past few
years and that means that there are lots of people starting CrossFit gyms.
Some of those companies do it right, some do it wrong, some are just out to
make a quick buck etc...

My observation is that if they are doing it right they SHOULD be making a
big deal out of form and knowing how to do the workouts properly. My wife
was not even allowed to go to a class at her gym till she attended a full
afternoon of training on the exercises she would be asked to do. Even after
that she says the trainers are constantly helping everyone do things
safely. Before each workout she looks at their website to review what's
going to be in that day's workout and sometimes reviews videos or other
things about an exercise she hasn't done in awhile. This happens less now
that she's been going more but at the start she did it a lot.

I think it's probably true of any intense workout that there are dangers of
injury and CrossFit is definitely a very intense form of workout. I would
be selective on which gyms you join and you may want to try a few out
before you choose one that you think matches you. Many have a free day
class that anyone can take without joining that's a specific day of the
week or month. Warm up properly, eat right, etc etc...
