If he is using one of our distributions (i.e. not compiling from
sources), he is using the work of hundreds of people whose explicit
target is to avoid unexpected breakages. Specially under minor
updates. 

Breakages might happen, yes, if you are following bleeding
edge. That's why users should not generally follow upstream
development ;-)
