Hi, Linda,
I think that anyone who breeds animals is making a tremendous
investment of money, time and effort that will never be repaid if they
are doing it the right way. Yes, the "love affair" does usually start
with a pet dog (mine did..<G>), but I had been breeding horses prior to
owning a Cavalier (among many dogs I have owned over time) and was aware
that if I was to be serious breeding them, it would take time, effort
and money. It is one of the things I tell people who want to begin
showing or breeding; plan to give up a LOT of your other dreams in order
to do this correctly. If you are owner handling, plan to give up social
life on weekends and make friends who like dogs; likely it will be hard
for you to maintain both. If you are using a pro handler, plan to save
money on everything else. Vacations from work=dog shows. Vet bills are
FAR more expensive than the cost of the dog itself if one is doing it
all correctly.
So, it IS about "investing".....that is money, time and effort to do
this right. It is not a decision that I took at all lightly. Unless
one is independently wealthy, doesn't work and doesn't have children, it
is doubtful that life will ever be viewed as "normal" again by
outsiders. My mother won't even visit here as our furniture is
so........OLD..........<G>. We do invest in our dogs.....every penny we
can to give them the best.

ALL of that being said, I'm sure that you are right that some are
getting into Cavaliers to make money. The joke is on them! <G>
