<Since a large percentage of Cavaliers have late onset MVD meaning we have
bred them by the time we find out, perhaps something to add to the equation
when we breed is to try to concentrate on building our lines from long
lived stock but it is a mistake to make hearts the sole criteria for
breeding any more than it would be to breed for heads, coats, tail sets,
etc. without consideration to the entire dog.

Of breeders who are testing and concentrating on long-lived lines, do you
think it will be possible to increase the average life-span of Cavaliers?
Dinah suddenly looks like she is very old to me. She's still very
beautiful, but her face is drawn, and she's just really slowing down. She
will be 13 years old in January.
It would be wonderful we could some day expect to have them live to a ripe
old age of 19 like some poodles or other breeds do. Will that ever be
possible?
