I agree totally with you and often find myself keeping females unsuitable for the ring but excellent for breeding due to exagerrated type. Bitches with doggy heads, big bitches with big bone. My Champion Male Labrador is used most often for the reason he is of exagerrated type. When bred to a plain female the babies are typey but not overdone as I have heard him called many times at ringside by people who does not know he is mine. Hes too much dog with too much bone and head. Not for breeding he isnt as obviously deduced by the amount of breedings he has had. The overdone females often produce lovely male puppies with great head type. Also sometimes it is better to breed an outstanding head piece rather than two ok balanced individuals with no truly outstanding feature when trying to reach you own individual kennel type. I happen to be a head hunter/ rear angulation freak. Each of us even judges have our weakness. And this is how magnificent dogs with that little something extra are created. As far as going to the well which means using the same dog in the pedigree repeatedly, inbreeding, or tightly linebreeding. Some breeders of long standing do not even linebreed as they feel it reduces the "Hybrid Vigor" (producing spindly specimens)of a varied gene pool and of coursse does not let the bad recessives pile up with potential litters full of messes. I am still a bit confused as when I started into Cavaliers from Labradors where I have done everything from inbreed to outcross, that in Cavaliers one must tightly linebreed or inbreed as type was still way to diverse (wild) to be able to predict outcomes of breedings. Any answers to that??AOW Award of Merit. I take this to mean that if the judge could have given out 5 first place ribbons say in a specialty (large entry) that all the recipients were good enough dogs to have merited a first place ribbon but the winning dog was somehow a little better that day, whether it was coat condition, condition in general, presentation, ring manner. It is still a great honor which denotes your dog was on the same level as the winning dog of the day and definitely something that caught the judges eye as a great example of what the breed should be. Arent I just a font of information today. What I want for Christmas is a beautiful show bitch wholecolor or with a head to swoon over and afford without having to give up my home and children. I have waited a long long time Santa. I would also like a fat grey horse so that I can ride again someday and for my new landscape company to take off big and some friends in this new city I have moved to. Maybe if I had the pretty dog to show I would get out and start showing again and meet some... a little melancholy at Christmas time. Its the season.
