Yes, Charlie (the Golden) was a very influential dog in our breed and you'd be hard pressed to find a show pedigree without him in it. To my knowledge he never obtained a hip clearance from OFA. However, it is my understanding (and please remember this is long before my time in the breed, I was a toddler when Charlie was around) hip clearance testing was in its infancy in comparison to where it is today. I don't know exactly when it became GRCA's advertising policy to include hip, eye, and heart clearances. But I don't think one can compare in any breed the frequency and types of health testing, or lack thereof 30 years ago to today.
