From: Laura Trunk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <<For those who don't believe in annual checkups on your dogs--how often do you go to the doctor for an annual checkup on yourself?>>
Yes that's another difference, I only go to my doctor if I'm sick, the only routine test I have done is a cervical smear once a year after abnormal cells where found & treated a few years ago. The same as I would an individual dog if they had a known problem. <<I don't know why, but something in my Cavaliers faces just makes me want to treat them more like human children than livestock! Maybe I'm weird or in the minority, but that is how I feel.>> You are entitled to feel how you want, but they are neither humans or livestock, they are dogs & treasured pets & friends. <<I KNOW dogs hide pain>>Not on my life would I look for my dogs to tell me they are in pain--that they have a problem of some sort--as I know they wouldn't unless they were REALLY in pain.>> Laura pain is not the only indication of something amiss, I don't think dogs hide pain I just don't think they feel it as acutely. I can look in my dogs eyes and tell by their behaviour if something is not 100% right. If people feel more comfortable testing for every known ailment, that's fine by me. But I'm not going to jump on that bandwagon until I see a problem. Like Jeanie, I have always found Cavaliers to be a strong, robust, healthy breed and it is a shame that others experience is not similar.
