Jeanie, there is an increased amount of inbreeding in the U.S. as the problems which caused the restriction of the gene pool are ones of longstanding. Inbreeding of itself is not the culprit. If you take your healthy Australian dogs for the overall gene pool in your country and inbreed, there is still a residual diversity that will prevent some of the problems that we have in the U.S.
The best way to explain it would be to describe the U.S. gene pool as similar to the gene pools of many small isolated islands. Although the small islands make up one large group, there is very little exchange of genetic makeup between the islands. The gene pool diversity of each island is already greatly reduced by availability before you ever begin to inbreed. I'm probably not making this clear, but suffice to say, the overall genetic diversity in the U.S. has been compromised for many years by things which have nothing to do with what is best for the breed.
