The same goes for those of us who are not interested in breeding but do
exhibit in conformation and performance events. All my dogs have been "pets"
first, in the sense that they provide companionship. The best I have bred in
the past and tried to carry on those characteristics that made them such
good pets, as well as win in the conformation ring. But I believe those of
us who are mainly exhibitors/companion dog owners have the right to have
some say in what decisions are made that affects the future of this
wonderful breed. Especially since there are breeders who seem to believe
that structure, sound movement, and/or temperament should take a back seat
to what many call "type", i.e., coat, markings, tail carriage, head. I seen
their results in the conformation ring; "typey" dogs with gorgeous coats
that moved with roached backs, straight rears, etc., and/or did not have
that happy-go-lucky attitude that should be typical of this breed. As one
who exhibits in conformation, I want a Cavalier that meets the standard, AND
I want a dog that has the sound structure and temperament that enables him
to excel at performance sports.
