The AKC requires all dogs to be chipped or tattooed. I tattoo mine as I
prefer that method. Tattoos are required for OFA and CERF as well.

As far as taking a ringer, that is self-defeating. What is the use of going
for the test if you don't want to know the condition of the dog?
