Dave,
I have to respectfully disagree with you. There is an increase of
reproductive problems (such as pyometra which, as you know effects the
well being of the breeding bitch) which significantly increases the
longer one waits to breed. This is the reason that the cardiologists
who wrote the protocol were concerned about going much further than
waiting until 2.5 years old. They felt that the risk of pyometra and
infertility or whelping problems were "acceptable" at this age; that
meant to them that there were an acceptable number of Cavaliers who
would have problems. If this was your Cavalier, it wouldn't be
acceptable. That said, I've not bred a bitch under 2.5 years old; but I
have had problems! I have almost lost a bitch to pyometra and I have
also had infertility problems. I HOPE that I won't also have whelping
problems down the line.

There are some wonderful reproductive seminars online including the
transcript of Dr. Van Hutchinson's talk on VIN. They directly
contravene a number of our ethics conventions, such as back to back
breeding. As a breeder of horses, I can tell you that for the health of
all concerned, it is better to breed early, back to back and retire the
female from breeding at any early age. So, when considering the health
of our Cavaliers, one also has to consider the health of the breeding
bitchs.

I *choose* to follow the protocol despite the concerns and problems
which I have; but they do exist.

Best,

Suze
