Hi, Glenn,
OES are large dogs with a lot of weight to bear. I have to say that my
opinon on this was formed by my former vet (brother to my current vet)
who is an orthopedic resident now at Tufts. He felt.....and still
feels.....that with all the orthopedic problems which present at Tufts,
HD in small dogs is rarely debilitating. I am not saying it is
impossible, but of the large population which he has seen the toy dogs
just don't come in looking like the medium and large sized dogs.
Arthritis is another issue entirely. I suspect that it is often
confused with HD.
Again, that is *not* to say that I don't test hips or want HD in my
breeding program, but rather to say that I think it is not the problem
which causes the pain which is seen most often in Cavaliers or toy dogs.
Best,
Suze

I've also been told by breeders that "some of the best moving
Cavaliers in the ring" have hip displasia. Well?
When I was showing Old English Sheepdogs some of the best moving dogs in the
ring had HD. OES weren't really known for good rears in those days, I don't
know about now. But when you saw a good mover you could spot it immediately.
HD usually didn't become a problem until after the dogs' show career. Many
breeders had some pretty crippled dogs at home and reminisced about what a
good mover it was.
