Oh, I do - both a clean 9.2.2 install for Classic and a busier install for use under MacOS 9, with loads of extras. However, my machine is unsupported - it's a Beige G3 with maxed-out RAM - so rebooting is fraught & takes manual intervention. I'd rather not. > If you use Classic under X, you might > consider this just to transfer files for setting up your Classic II which > has to be faster than transferring files 1.4MB at a time. True. What's annoying is that various webpages say that 5.1 /should/ work on Sys6. > BUT, Word 3 is a great program > that runs under 6 -- If you personally don't have a use for it, that > doesn't mean it's not a good choice for someone else. Gosh. That's going back a bit! I don't think I ever used it before v4. > OTOH, if I understand > what you are saying, almost any application you do find useful under OS > 7,8,9 & X is going to run very un-usefully slow on the Classic II running 7. > In which case, it strikes me that a Compact Mac is not for you -- or an > upgrade hack is in order if it's a question of wanting to use the form > factor. Oh, no, not at all. I'm only doing this for fun and the general interest - it's been quite educational and I enjoy the fact that this ancient machine, from the time of my very beginnings in professional IT, can still be networked and interoperated with my modern kit. I used Sys6 back in 1988 or so - and not since. It's a big change! Plus, it's been interesting to find out how much I've forgotten. Still, somehow, it feels like a more /real/ and authentic Apple Macintosh experience than a RISC machine with hundreds of meg of RAM and multiple big colour screens and so on. This is what it's all about. About the only actual /use/ I have for the machine is wordprocessing, for which it would be pleasant if I could get it fully on my home network. It works fine for this under 7.6.1. I'm just doing Sys6 for laughs, and for the nostalgia - but the speed improvement is most gratifying. -- Liam Proven Home: http://welcome.to/liamsweb * Blog: http://lproven.livejournal.com AOL, Yahoo UK: liamproven * ICQ: 73187508 * MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
