I always wondered why, when booting 7.6.1, the machine started, showed
a happy Mac, thought for a second - literally, if that long - then
rebooted, Bonged again, and loaded the OS.

Booting into System 6 from 7.6.1 shows why. Sys6 pops a dialog saying
that this Mac is in 32-bit mode, which 6.0.8 does not support, and
would I like to reset it to 24-bit mode and continue or restart? If I
restart, the same thing happens. Click 24-bit, it bongs, reboots and
loads 6.

The reason a Classic II can run 7.6.1 is that its ROM is 32-bit clean
and 7.6.1 only runs in 32-bit mode - but the C2 always cold starts in
24-bit mode, I think (my NVRAM battery is dead; it may be that if mine
worked, it would remember this setting). A cold boot with Sys6 works
fine 1st time; a warm boot from 7 needs a reboot. 7 just does it
automatically, without asking, which is more sensible and more
friendly but less informative.

Ah. No, it was never shown here except in the occasional special
edition in a retrospective or something. I must confess that those
I've seen didn't impress me that much - and I love comedy. I vaguely
know Gilda Radner - I think from other TV or movie work... But then, I
stopped watching TV nearly a decade ago, and I'm forgetting now...
