Steve et al
I've also been a Pascal man since the late seventies also using Pascal MT+
on our own design CPM based systems. I was delighted by Borlands first
offering of Turbo Pascal for CPM - both by the capabilitys and by the whole
Borland ethos - the price was absolutely right at (if I recall correctly)
US$79 and Frank Borland and his donkey were a great source of amusement -
Ever since I have been a dedicated user of Borlands Pascal and welcomed each
new version with excitement and anticipation - upgrade price was never an
issue until recent years.
I now skip versions and still work with V4. I feel (somewhat) a sense of
loss and perhaps betrayal about the way Borland has become "Enterprise
centric" (the whole Inprise thing) but that is a purely emotional response
and I guess one must face reality and at least appreciate the fact that
after some 20 odd years I can still use a product that has been consistently
improved over that period and is more pleasurable to use and more productive
now than ever. - Is that worth the cost now being asked ?
I think so and I will probably be upgrading to 6 in the near future (must
check the features first).
I must say that I am fortunate in that most of my work doesn't involve heavy
duty database or web stuff so I need'nt face the costs of Enterprise
versions but I would have thought that in that sort of environment more
money would be available?
Just a thought - I feel that the PC upgrade treadmill is probably a more
serious drain on independent consultants resources than the cost of software
upgrades - I reckon it costs me something like $3-4K every couple of years
for new PC gear plus the week (at least) that it takes to get it all set up
so I can start work again - Say 3 grand a year ? Probaly more when you take
into account all the time spent on service packs , driver problems, new
cards 'cos the new PC doesn't have enough ISA slots etc etc etc ......
Just my two pennith worth :-)
