Ok,
the understanding I have (based on what I managed to absorb at Richard's last
presentation) is that there are two distinct products in the
offing:
Delphi.Net
The
long awaited .Net compiler for Delphi. I look forward to this because it will
bring our code in line with the future and open up many possibilities (e.g.
ASP.Net code talking directly to Delphi.Net code without the need for
ugly COM in between).
Due to be released late November / early
December this year.
Delphi
8
Win32
compiler for Delphi. Ho hum, yet another version of Delphi. Due to be released
sometime next year. First or second quarter, I can't remember which. I can't say
I was paying much attention at this point.
It
seems that they had to choose between delaying everything another few quarters
or finishing one of the above products off and leaving the other 'till later.
They chose Delphi.Net and good on 'em I say :)
All
that said, the software assurance deal that Borland have offered with Delphi 7
means that you should be able to get both Delphi 8 & Delphi.Net for free if
you signed up with the software assurance. Note I say "should" it is all
contingent on the lead times for the software of course.
Me? I
didn't go for the software assurance, I am keen on just getting Delphi.Net and
leaving it at that :)
